About the Book

The following story is an exploration of the necessity for having periods of both driving motivation and reflecting appreciation. An exploration of the idea that sometimes guilt and Hesitation create effort and drive which can all be wasted if there isn't also pause and appreciation of your surroundings from time to time, whether those surroundings are perfect or far from it. If There's a California Then I've Dreamed It takes place in a period of reflection in which the narrator appreciates the present and contrasts it with memories of a trip to Los Angeles that shook loose a few Hesitations within him. All of this is loosely based on half-truth moments of my own life, a few days in California that pushed me to work for myself, eventually moving from Chicago to Oklahoma to make furniture, and a family vacation years later when that furniture company failed and I had exhausted myself in my efforts to keep that from happening.California stood out to me at the time as a poignant mirror of my own complacency and general dissatisfaction, maybe it was only the lens of my Hesitations and guilt that put it all in view but it seemed that everywhere I looked there were people moving in an effort to churn out success or fulfillment. Often both.Broken Bow in southeast Oklahoma existed in contrast, as a forced break from exertion and a brief period of seeing my surroundings good and bad. I won't say more on this except that there's a specific feeling that I haven't found the name for: the act of appreciating hard times. A larger-than-self sensation where you can see your surroundings without losing yourself in reaction to them, you can learn from the present and know that you'll learn more in the future. There's a temporary acknowledgment that every step is integral to movement.Anyway, I hope this short narrative gives extra perspective on the relationships between drive and relaxation.- Joshua Cade McVey
