Jahrhunderts wird unsere Gesellschaft als Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft verstanden. Soziologen wie Bell und Castells beschreiben die Entwicklung der Industriegesellschaft hin zu einer neuen Form der Gesellschaft. In der alten Gesellschaftsform waren Arbeit, Kapital und Rohstoffe die ent-scheidenden Ressourcen, während diese in der post-industriellen Gesellschaft nur noch eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen. Die zentrale Ressource der Wissensgesellschaft ist theoretisches Wissen, welches durch Bildungsinstitutionen in institutionalisierter Form an die Menschen weitergegeben wird. Durch diese neue Ressource hat sich auch das Bild der Arbeit grundlegend verändert. Neben der Ware Arbeitskraft kann ein Arbeiter nun eigenes Wissen einbringen und hat spezielle Fähigkeiten, die ihn zu einer hochqualifizierten Arbeitskraft werden lassen. Dieser Typus der Arbeitskraft wird als Arbeitskraftunternehmer beschrieben, in dessen Leben Arbeit eine besondere Bedeutung findet. Aus Sicht der Arbeitenden ist ihre Tätigkeit nicht mehr eine Notwendigkeit zur Erhaltung des Lebensunterhalts, sondern ein Bestandteil des Lebens, welchen man gerne ausübt. Als Folge der Globalisierung ist es zu einem nationalen und internationalen Konkurrenzkampf zwischen Unternehmen gekommen. Dieser Wettbewerb wird insbesondere von großen wirtschaftlichen Organisationen ausgetragen, die um hochqualifizierte Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter werben, um ihren wirtschaftlichen Erfolg zu festigen oder auszubauen. Steigende Nachfrage nach Arbeitskräften bei gleichbleibendem Angebot an qualifizierten Arbeiterinnen und Arbeitern haben Unternehmen vor die Herausforderung gestellt, neue Arbeitskräfte anzuwerben, an sich zu binden und der Mitarbeiterfluktuation entgegen
