About the Book

I Used To Be An Illegal is a powerhouse non-fiction work that takes readers through the complicated intricacies and passionate topics of immigration. The book begins as JG Monaco shares the very personal tale of how he and his family arrived in America and eventually became citizens. Also included are the stories of other immigrants and their struggles to arrive in what would become their new home. As these stories unfold, the concept of immigration is taken from a remote talking point on an evening news program to an intimate tale of someone who might be a friend or neighbor. JG Monaco's brave retelling of both his childhood and the process he followed on his trail to becoming an American citizen after being undocumented in the United States is not only intriguing but also timely. The author takes the tale a step further, though, as he highlights the implications of enacting poorly written immigration legislation, such as the Arizona Law. Finally, Monaco proposes reasonable changes to the existing immigration process which might alleviate the current challenges while allowing all sides of the debate to retain their human dignity.
About the Author: JG. Monaco was born Jesus Gerardo Monaco Ruiz in the city of Valencia, Venezuela on January 10th 1982. As a child, he was known for being polite and a bit shy. He was interested in Venezuelan and world's history from early years. Playful, eager to please, very social and empathetic to others, young JG Monaco was very perceptive of people's needs and feelings. He was, and still is a very competitive young man; a personality trait that served him throughout difficult and crucial moments in his life. During his elementary school years he began to enjoy giving presentations to his classmates, yet another trait that would develop later in his life during his high school and even college years. JG Monaco is a natural leader and a strategic follower. He has a passion for solving social issues. His love and respect for medicine came from admiring his grandfather's work and legacy. During his years as a teenager, JG Monaco experienced life changing events that helped define him as an adult and ultimately as a professional. His first attempts at writing were fueled by matters of the heart and were broaden by the social and political changes of Venezuela at that time. He followed his parents when his entire family was forced to move out of Venezuela. United States became his second home in September of 2000 and became an United States citizen in 2011. He is also the loving father of three children. As a adult, JG Monaco remained interested in solving social issues, debating politics and helping others. He attended College as soon as he was allowed to, becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic in the state of Florida. He completed an associate's degree in Emergency Medical Services from Indian River State College. He continued his higher education at the same State College and eventually earned his Bachelor's degree in Health Care Management. He currently serves his community as a compassionate Firefighter/Paramedic and a member of the Special Operations Team of the fire department that he works for.
