Fin dalla prima edizione di questo libro che apparve nel 1898, la storia italiana in generale, e quella di Firenze, in particolare, è stata oggetto di così tante ricerche che il professor Villari ha pensato bene di ri-modificare il suo libro alla luce delle recenti indagini. Nonostante qualche critica avversa ha sempre mantenuto la sua linea originale, consistente nella ripubblicazione di una serie di saggi indipendenti, che sono stati pubblicati ad a intervalli che si estendono in un periodo di circa 20 anni. "L'anno 1866 cominciai nel nostro Istituto Superiore alcune lezioni sulla Storia di Firenze. In esse mi proponevo di esaminare più specialmente quale era stata la costituzione politica della Repubblica, quali le sue varie forme, in conseguenza delle rivoluzioni interne, che così lungamente travagliarono la Città. In tal modo io speravo di riuscire a scoprir le cause vere di queste rivoluzioni; di trovare una specie di filo conduttore nel laberinto d'una storia, che, non ostante i grandi scrittori che l'avevano trattata, a molti appariva assai spesso intricata ed oscura; di determinare i periodi, in cui dovrebbe essere logicamente divisa. About the Author: Pasquale Villari (1827 - 1917), storico e politico italiano fu allievo a Napoli di Basilio Puoti e Francesco De Sanctis. Divenne professore di storia all'Università di Pisa e, successivamente, di storia moderna all'Istituto di Studi Superiori in Firenze, di cui fu il fondatore. Scrisse diversi lavori su Girolamo Savonarola e Niccolò Machiavelli. Ricordato anche per i suoi studi sulla questione meridionale molti dei suoi lavori furono tradotti in inglese dalla moglie, Linda White Mazini Villari. Intensa fu la sua attività di parlamentare: fu deputato al Parlamento nel 1870-1876 e nel 1880-1882. Senatore del Regno dal 1884 e Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione dal 1891 al 1892. Fu durante il suo ministero che vennero istituiti nel 1891 gli Uffici Regionali per la Conservazione dei Monumenti, ovvero le attuali Soprintendenze per i Beni Architettonici ed Artistici. Socio corrispondente dal 1893, divenne accademico della Crusca l'8 febbraio 1898. Vi promosse la costituzione di una commissione per la redazione di vocabolari dei dialetti italiani.
