Mais un brouhaha de rires et de cris, de chocs singuliers montait, par intermittences, jusqu'à la terrasse, qu'abritait un velum de soie. Les dames, appuyées au rebord de pierre, se penchaient pour mieux voir, et, auprès d'elles, avec un sourire un peu dédaigneux, les chevaliers regardaient aussi. Par-dessus le rempart de Jérusalem, dans un méplat du terrain qui dégringole presque à pic jusqu'à la vallée de Josaphat, on pouvait suivre des yeux les évolutions d'un groupe d'écuyers et de damoiseaux jouant à la quintaine. À cet endroit, la muraille, dominée par le palais royal et le massif du Temple, formait un angle rentrant et projetait une ombre très allongée, dans laquelle, à l'abri du soleil, on avait établi le jeu. Le mannequin, couvert d'armes sarrasines, était solidement attaché à des pieux et faisait face au jouteur, qui, la lance en arrêt, piquait son cheval et tâchait de pourfendre l'adversaire inanimé. Les rudes chocs bosselaient la cuirasse immobile, ou bien l'arme se brisait, ne laissant qu'un tronçon dans les mains de l'assaillant. Quelquefois un élan maladroit désarçonnait le cavalier, qui s'abattait sur le sol avec un grand bruit de métal froissé. Alors, sur la terrasse royale, les belles curieuses se rejetaient en arrière, étouffaient un rire et disaient à demi-voix: - En voici un qui, de longtemps, ne sera pas digne de chausser les éperons !
About the Author: Louise Charlotte Ernestine Gautier, dite Judith Gautier, par son mariage Madame Catulle Mendès, est une femme de lettres française, née à Paris le 25 août 1845 et morte à Saint-Énogat (aujourd'hui Dinard) le 26 décembre 1917. Elle est inhumée à Dinard dans le quartier de Saint-Énogat, où elle possédait une maison, Le pré aux oiseaux Fille de l'écrivain Théophile Gautier et d'Ernesta Grisi (la soeur de la danseuse Carlotta Grisi), elle passa sa petite enfance dans une liberté quasi-absolue et sous la surveillance d'une nourrice à sa dévotion, qui ne lui rendirent que plus pesant son internement au pensionnat Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde. Enfin, son père la fit venir auprès de lui et de sa plus jeune soeur, Estelle. C'est là qu'elle fit montre de talents originaux, et qu'elle fit la connaissance de nombreux amis de son père, parmi lesquels Baudelaire ou les frères Goncourt. Elle parle elle-même de son enfance dans Le Collier des jours (1904). La première contribution de Judith Gautier à la littérature fut la publication d'un article sur la traduction française d'Euréka, d'Edgar Poe, par Baudelaire. Ce dernier fut absolument bouleversé par l'article de Judith. Théophile Gautier recueillit un jour un lettré chinois du nom de Ding Dunling, réfugié politique en France, qui apprit à Judith la langue chinoise et l'initia à la civilisation, notamment la littérature, de l'Empire du Milieu. À vingt-deux ans, elle publia Le Livre de Jade, une collection d'anciens poèmes chinois, choisis et traduits avec l'assistance de son précepteur, et ce premier livre lui assura d'emblée un grand succès auprès des lettrés de l'époque. Judith Gautier atteint peu après un succès encore plus éclatant avec la publication de ses deux premiers romans, Le Dragon impérial (1869) et L'Usurpateur (1875).
