Le roman du Renard Préface Notre dessein a été de présenter au public la grande épopée animale du Moyen-Âge sous une forme aisément accessible, tout en respectant, autant qu'il se pouvait, la couleur si pittoresque et si savoureuse de l'original. Nous avons choisi le titre de Roman du Renard pour ne pas étonner les lecteurs peu familiarisés avec notre vieille littérature. L'ensemble des contes, dont notre Recueil est une adaptation et qui remontent pour la plupart aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles, formait un vaste cycle compris sous l'appellation de Roman de Renart. Le nom commun de renard en ancien français était goupil. Les auteurs qui composèrent le récit de ses aventures donnèrent le nom propre de Renart à leur malicieux héros. Renart fut le goupil, comme Noble fut le lion, Ysengrin le loup et Chanteclair le coq. La substitution, au XIIe siècle, du nom renart à celui de goupil et la disparition finale de ce dernier témoignent de l'extraordinaire fortune que le Roman de Renart a conquise, dès l'origine, auprès de l'imagination populaire.

Alphonse et Mathilde eurent toujours des liens fraternels très forts. Lorsqu'il s'inscrit à l'Ecole Supérieure de Pharmacie, Mathilde accompagne son frère à Paris où elle enseigne comme institutrice libre. Elle rencontre et épouse Charles Leroy, un ami parisien d'Alphonse et rédacteur au journal "Le Tintamarre". Écrivain, elle publie sous le nom de Jeanne Leroy-Allais, dix-sept ouvrages: romans (dont deux couronnés par l'Académie Française: "Marie-Rose au couvent" et "Âmes vaillantes"), études de Morale et de Sociologie, des livres-albums pour enfants dont certains sont illustrés par Benjamin Rabier ("Chez les Bêtes," " Le Roman de Renard", " L'homme qui comprend le langage des animaux")... En 1913, Mathilde publie un livre sur son frère Alphonse: "Alphonse Allais, souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse ", préfacé par Alfred Capus et qu'elle dédie à "Messieurs Tristan Bernard, Alfred Capus, Maurice Donnay, Lucien Guitry, qui furent les meilleurs et les plus fidèles amis d'Alphonse Allais".
