About the Book

In his book, I Got'Cho Back, Dr. Horn combines research findings with his 20 years of community experience to provide insights and guidance about how to relate with young Black males. Throughout his book, Dr. Horn eloquently provides a historical context for some of the most profound lifespan development issues that impact many young Black males in America. Especially after the recent underpinnings of the Trayvon Martin case, Dr. Horn's manuscript is a significantly relevant tool to assist teachers, therapists, doctors, attorneys, community leaders, and lay people with their work helping underserved communities, particularly in the area of race relations and trauma awareness. In essence, it's an advisory book that provides personal and professional research that directly or indirectly influences the lifespan development of young Black males. Consistent throughout the research, Dr. Horn provides multiple examples of resources that have proven to be effective with young Black males such as, the Black church, extended family members, and specific therapeutic modalities. Most impactful, Dr. Horn's research resurfaces silenced voices of young Black males, as told through the lens of identity development, inadequate education, ineffective parenting, language acquisition, and therapeutic interventions. I Got'Cho Back is a stimulating book that allows the reader to delve into the nuances of young Black males' lifespan development issues. As a result of delving into these nuances, the author intends to inspire readers to become more interested in improving relationships with young Black males.
About the Author: Aaron L. Horn Dr. Aaron L. Horn was born and raised as a young child in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Although he moved away from Bayview as a young child, he has claimed Bayview because of his family of origin and love for his community. Dr. Horn began his career as an educator in the 1990's as a Program Coordinator for a non-profit agency called San Francisco Educational Services, previously located in the Bayview. As a young educator, he enjoyed establishing relationships with students and teachers from various cultures. While working in the community of Bayview, Dr. Horn attended San Francisco State University and completed his Bachelors in Sociology and Masters in Education. It was at this point in Dr. Horn's career where he began his life-long passion for counseling underserved families. After finishing his Master's degree, Dr. Horn obtained his teaching credential in History at San Francisco State University. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Horn taught, counseled, and mentored K-12 students in West Contra Costa Unified and San Francisco Unified School District. In 2008, Dr. Horn received his doctorate degree in International Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco. His research involved investigating the impact of caring relationships on young African American males' education. After working with underserved families as an educator, Dr. Horn realized that his teaching was becoming more therapeutic. By this means, the families that Dr. Horn was working with began to engage in candid discussions regarding their mental health issues. As a result of these discussions, Dr. Horn decided to re-enroll at the University of San Francisco and pursue his life- long passion of becoming a therapist. In summer 2012, Dr. Horn received his Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology. For over twenty years, Dr. Horn has devoted his passion to the enhancement of the Bayview Hunters Point community. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including "Community Advocate Award" from San Francisco State University. Dr. Horn is currently an educational consultant for a non-profit agency called Brainstorm Tutoring, a Mental Health Consultant for the Children's Council and the owner of Horn Development Consulting. All organizations are located in San Francisco, California. For more information regarding Dr. Horn's work, please contact him at aaronlhorn.com.
