Durant mon voyage en Europe, j'avais toujours donné la préférence aux vieilles auberges, qui, si elles sont parfois moins confortables que nos immenses caravansérails modernes, offrent à l'observateur des sujets d'étude plus fertiles en imprévu. À mon arrivée à Londres, je m'installai donc dans une antique hôtellerie, située assez loin du centre de la ville, au milieu d'un quartier qui me rappelait l'époque déjà classique du docteur Johnson. Le premier soir de mon séjour, je descendis dans la salle à manger, où je commandai mon dîner au génie même du décorum, personnifié par un serviteur en cravate blanche aussi raide qu'obséquieux. À peine eus-je franchi le seuil de cette salle que je me sentis destiné à récolter une ample moisson d'impressions britanniques. L'auberge du Lion-Rouge, comme beaucoup d'autres choses que je devais rencontrer en Angleterre, semblait n'avoir résisté aux ravages du temps qu'en prévision de ma visite.
About the Author: Henry James (New York, 15 avril 1843 - Chelsea, 28 février 1916) est un écrivain américain, naturalisé britannique le 26 juillet 1915. Un maître du réalisme littéraire. Figure majeure du réalisme littéraire du XIXe siècle, Henry James est considéré comme un maître de la nouvelle et du roman pour le grand raffinement de son écriture. On le connaît surtout pour une série de romans importants dans lesquels il décrit la rencontre de l'Amérique avec l'Europe. Ses intrigues traitent de relations personnelles et de l'exercice du pouvoir qu'elles impliquent, ainsi que d'autres questions morales. En adoptant le point de vue d'un personnage central de l'histoire, il explore les phénomènes de conscience et de perception. Le style de ses oeuvres tardives l'ont fait comparer à un peintre impressionniste. Henry James voulait convaincre les écrivains britanniques et américains de présenter leur vision du monde avec la même liberté que les auteurs français. Son usage imaginatif du point de vue narratif, du monologue intérieur et du narrateur mensonger dans ses propres nouvelles et romans apporta une nouvelle profondeur et un regain d'intérêt à la fiction réaliste, et préfigure les oeuvres modernes du XXe siècle. Outre son imposante oeuvre de fiction, cet auteur prolifique produisit également de nombreux articles, des livres de voyage, de biographie, d'autobiographie et de critique littéraire, mais aussi des pièces de théâtre, dont certaines furent montées de son vivant avec un succès relatif. Son oeuvre dramatique aurait profondément influencé ses dernières productions littéraires.
