DA Ivrea dove la verde pianura del Cana vese si restringe in forma d'imbuto per infi lare salendo la stretta delle gole valdostane, fino all' esiguo villaggio d' Entreves rannic chiato come per freddo ai piedi del Monte Bianco, la valle d'aosta e tutta seminata di torri, di rocche, di castelli, di rovine dentate e merlate, inesauribile argomento di ispira zioni e di studi all' artista ed all' archeologo. Ogni sbocco di minor vallata nella mag giore na la sua grigia vedetta e per la di stesa di quarantotto miglia piemontesi, non ostante gli innumerevoli sproni delle costiere onde la valle è scompartita in altrettanti ba cini 1' uno pressochè invisibile all' altro, nonce rudero di castello che non ne scopra un altro in vista e talvolta altri parecchi.

Dalla rocca tozza e serrata che sembra tut tora pretendere minacciosa la taglia ed il pe daggio, all' umido castelluzzo mezzo nascosto fra i tuguri del villaggio, dallo splendidoma niero dei grandi feudatari, alla torre sottile e petulante di qualche signorotto spiantato; dal l'edifizio che dura intero in ogni sua parte, a quello che occorre riedificare mentalmente sulla scorta di monchi pezzi di muro, che ogni vento sgretola e fende ogm Inverno, dalla cinta del X secolo, alla fortezza munita del XV I, tutte le forme della architettura*civile e militare dei tempi feudali vi hanno esempi, che, pur serbando i caratteri generali onde ogni secolo è riconoscibile in larghissime re gioni, rispondono per segni particolari alla natura dei luoghi in cui sorsero ed all'indole degli abitanti.

Le viuzze dei villaggi'pure allargandosi ed accostandosi colle sgradevoli tinte delle case e colla eretta nudità delle muraglie ai pro gressi della vita civile e commerciante, mo strano tuttora qua e là qualche angolo oscurodove i colori digradano dolcemente dal nero cupo alle più delicate sfumature del grigio. Accanto alle nuove dalle persiane verdi e dagli spigoli corrosi, si apre qualche finestra a cro ciera incorniciata di pietra a gole. Certe case rifatteserbano la porta a sesto acuto col tri foglio grossolano che la incorona, e sui car dini rugginosi gemono usci tarlati e massicci coll'anima scolpita a pergamene ripiegate. In tutta la valle, nei nomi delle piazze e delle vie, nelle finestre, nell'absidi, nei banchi, nei arredi delle chiese, nelle scalinate che vi sal gono, nelle cornici di cotto che fregianoi muri, nelle gronde di'pietra che ne sporgono e dentro...le case, nelle chiavi e nelle crociere delle volte, nelle mensole delle tran, nei ca mini, negli alari, nelle lucerne, nei mortai, nelle arche e nei cassoni scolpiti, nelle serra ture degli usci, nei vetri e nelle inferriate delle finestre, nella pentola dove bolle la po lenta, il Medio Evo ha lasciato la sua im pronta originale a profitto dei pittori, dei poeti, dei dotti, dei curiosi e dei rigattieri. Dei castelli, i più antichi e di più disage vole accesso, sono cosi rovinati da non potercisi raccapezzare senza la scorta di qualche dottrina e di maggiore facoltà immaginativa.
