Cette voix spéciale ne me permettait plus un doute. Défiguré par la lèpre ou masqué d'une cagoule, j'aurais reconnu entre toutes cette voix grasse et trouée comme une vieille conduite d'évier. Elle m'avait communiqué, cette inoubliable voix, tant de stupéfiantes réflexions et tant d'imprévues histoires ! La mémoire d'Hélie, son imagination aussi, était le rendez-vous des choses à la fois les plus effroyables, les plus divertissantes et les plus baroques. Il y avait de tout dans sa vie: des souvenirs d'offices et des souvenirs de bouges, des relents de cuisines et de lupanars, des parfums de boudoirs et des moisissures de garnis. Dans sa vie, multiple et si remplie qu'elle en avait crevé son enveloppe extérieure devenue pareille à une loque, Hélie avait fréquenté des voleurs, des banquiers, des chasseurs de cercles, des comtes du Saint-Empire, des femmes galantes, des filles soumises, des garçons de bains, des mineurs des deux sexes, des cosmopolites et même des messieurs du clergé, sans oublier les marchands de billets, les camelots et les danseurs de bal public. Hélie avait même été, je crois, vaguement, machiniste dans un théâtre des boulevards extérieurs, ou tout au moins garçon d'accessoires; sa mémoire était aussi peuplée que l'arrière-boutique d'un fripier."
