Cette jeune fille paraissait non seulement pauvre, mais encore en proie à un violent chagrin. Elle semblait avoir conscience de son indigence, déplorer son sort et être envahie d'un insurmontable désir de luxe contrastant singulièrement avec les misérables hardes dont elle était couverte et qui, en aucune façon, ne pouvaient la protéger du froid. Grelottant de tous ses membres, les joues blêmes et transies, les lèvres tirées, elle se tenait devant l'étalage d'un marchand de confection, dont les merveilles lui faisaient battre le coeur de désir, tout comme si elle eût été une dame de qualité.
About the Author: Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, né le 27 janvier 1836 à Lemberg en Galicie, et mort le 9 mars 1895, est un historien et un écrivain. Les ascendances de Masoch sont slaves, espagnoles et bohémiennes. Son père est préfet de police à Lemberg. L'oeuvre de Masoch est inspirée par tous les récits que sa nourrice Handscha lui conte, les romans du folklore slave où les femmes ont un rôle prédominant. Handscha fut la première qui lui donna le goût du cruel, et implacable en lui racontant les légendes d'Ivan le terrible, de la czarine noire et de la juive Esterka cette Pompadour juive de la Pologne qui enchaînait le roi Casimir le Grand. Son oeuvre prend aussi sa source dans l'univers burlesque où il est élevé. Cette maison de police qui est la maison de son enfance, il y aperçoit des vagabonds, des criminels enchaînés, des prostituées ricanantes et fardées . Chaque jour on administre la schlague sous les fenêtres . Lorsqu'il évoque la maison de son enfance il hésite entre la nostalgie du paradis perdu et l'évocation d'un enfer
