Do you want to learn how to grow vegetables, plants, fruit and aromatic herbs without soil? Do you want to start building your hydroponic gardening system in a simple and sustainable way?
If yes, then keep reading...
In 2015, it was estimated that hydroponic farming has grown, and was worth $21.4 billion, with an expected annual growth of 7%. It would seem that hydroponics farming is changing slowly, but steadily.
Besides the changing dynamics of farming itself, other outside forces are pushing for the change, advocating for more controlled-agriculture, to boost food production. The earth's population is one key factor. It is expected that by 2050, the global population will have risen by a staggering 3billion persons, and more than 80 percent of the total population will be dwelling in the urban centers. Since we are already using the available farming areas, the arid regions too will need to be converted to production centers, and the way to do this is by introducing hydroponic farming in these areas.
One of the more popular methods is vertical urban farming where hydroponic farms are stacked one over another, in buildings, even in tall skyscrapers. This would be an ideal solution, especially when much of the land is taken up to house the large urban population. It would also place the farms strategically, right where the fresh produce is needed. Singapore and Michigan are already constructing these vertical gardens, and south London is also placing the disused bomb shelters into good use.
Interestingly, as man ventures further and further away from the Earth, NASA is looking into creating hydroponic farms in space to feed the astronauts. The research has been taking place at the University of Arizona, where scientists are looking into the possibility of creating a closed-loop system that will feel carbon dioxide and human waste into a hydroponic farm, which will possibly lead to the creation of oxygen, food, and water.

We have already established that in contrast to traditional agriculture where the soil provides support to the plant, allowing it to remain upright and providing a supply of nutrients, in hydroponics plants have artificial support and a solution containing all the required nutrients is provided. The idea behind the hydroponic setup is simple. It is thought that environmental factors often limit plant growth, and therefore, by providing a solution that contains nutrients to the plant's roots, the gardener provides a constant optimal supply of nutrients and water. The nutritional efficiency makes a plant live up to its potential by making it more productive.
