The truth is: We are used to grow plants with soil, but there are ample opportunities to grow them without it.

Growing plants without soil is known as hydroponics. The plants often grow much better when they are allowed to grow in moist air or in water. Most of the food items we eat, tomatoes being the primary, are already grown hydroponically.

We are all aware of the fact that plants get their food by the process of photosynthesis, in which they utilize sunlight and chlorophyll, to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. You can clearly see that there is no need for the soil in this entire process and this is proof enough to understand that soil is not the main ingredient for the plants to grow. You might argue that the water and the other nutrients are obtained from the soil, but the truth is that these things can be received from somewhere else, as well. If the roots are placed in a nutrient-rich solution, the soil is not needed at all. This is the basic principle of hydroponics, which means growing plants in water.

There are many advantages of growing a plant without soil. Some of the growers claim that plants have a better yield when they are grown hydroponically. This is because the plants are grown, with their roots dipped directly into the nutrient-rich solutions. They also get the nutrients much easier than the plants grown in the soil. People can divert more attention to stem and leaf growth. When the roots are smaller, the plants can be grown in the same area and greater yield can be obtained.

There are various ways in which hydroponics works. One very popular method is putting the plants in a plastic trough and allowing a solution of nutrients, trickle down the roots, with the help of a pump and obviously gravity. This technique is known as nutrient-film technique. The roots can also be supported by other nutrient-rich media like sand, vermiculite or sand. The crops which do well hydroponically are lettuces, herbs and strawberries.

The advantages of hydroponics are many:

• The plants grow faster.
• The yields are 20-25 percent more.
• There is less requirement for space.
• A huge amount of water is saved.
• There is no requirement of soil.
