About the Book

Hurry up Nurse! is a great addition to a popular genre. Dawn Brookes seems to have picked up where Jennifer Worth (Call the Midwife etc.) left off and one would hope she achieves similar popular success. I am a little older than Dawn Brookes, but grew up in England during the same period and circumstances so found her memoir delightfully evocative. She is an accomplished storyteller - her style of writing is relaxed and easy on the senses and I am hopeful that she will follow up this book with further reminiscences. Hurry up Nurse! is a pleasant, informative read and I do not hesitate to recommend it. Readers Favorite 5.0 stars> I hope any time I need a nurse, that nurse is as compassionate and professional as Dawn Brookes. I liked Hurry Up Nurse! I liked it very much. Even better, I like Dawn. I like her beginning, I like her journey. I like the person and professional she has become. What I like most about Hurry Up Nurse is the way Dawn wrote it. Her tone is perfect for the book. It's perfect for her life. Rich in detail, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, Hurry Up Nurse is always real and warm. Reader's Favorite Review 5.0 stars What a superb book Hurry up Nurse is. It reminded me so much of the fun and laughter that I too enjoyed during my training. I was able to relate to many of the anecdotes throughout the book. Different hospital, even different country but I trained in the 1970s too and this book is true to the era! Thank you, it was a wonderful read, I read the book on a cruise ship and laughed out loud on numerous occasions, much to the amusement of other passengers! Advanced Nurse Practitioner Hurry up Nurse! is a nurse memoir that follows the ups and downs of a trainee nurse in the 1970s. Written with humour and candour, it follows the experiences of the author as she and her friends come to terms with the non-stop hustle and bustle of hospital life. This book treats the reader to a peep behind the scenes as we enter the hospital wards. The author shares the discipline, laughter and inevitable sadness as she learns to cope with the strains of shift work. It also highlights the domineering presence of the Ward Sister during the era. 'The Sister called to me. 'Nurse Brookes, set up a trolley for a lumbar puncture.' 'I have never set up a trolley for a lumbar puncture Sister.' 'WELL LEARN!' She shouted and stormed of up the ward. The chapters are separated into ward placements and the experiences of caring for patients in each of these different environments draws readers in and helps us to understand what the student nurses' went through during their training. As well as an insight into nurse training, Hurry up nurse; a warmly written medical biography, provides a glimpse into the social history of life in the 1970s and early 1980s. This heart warming nursing memoir will make you laugh and make you cry. The book is a MUST read for anyone who loves medical and nursing memoirs whether your are medical or not you will enjoy this book. Amusing heartfelt true story of an up and coming nurse. A must read for any caring person with a sense of humour. B. Townsend, Amazon Customer 5.0 stars A must have!!! Easy to read, enjoyable and very funny... A trip down memory lane with great insight into the NHS and nurse training in the 1970s and 1980s...I can't wait for the next installment. P. Marquis, Amazon Customer, 5.0 stars
