The humpback whale's name emanates from the shape of its dorsal fin when the animal dives below the surface of the water. This species of baleen whale has a life span of 80-90 years, grows to 43-52 feet long and weighs approximately 25-30 tons. It has a distinctive body shape with long pectoral fins and a knobby head. Humpbacks are found around the globe in frigid polar waters with an estimated total population of just 80,000 currently remaining. The humpback whale feeds mainly on small fish and krill and will migrate up to 16,000 miles into the warm waters of Hawaii, Japan and Costa Rica to mate and raise young. The gestation period for the female is normally 11 months resulting in the birth on one calf. The newborn whale calves will stay with their mother for a year before heading out on their own. This whale species is endangered in certain areas of its range and so is protected. The humpback whale is known for its lengthy "singing" underwater. Researchers are not yet certain why the humpback whale sings but current thinking seems to revolve around attracting females and as a method of communicating with other whales. A natural predator of the humpback whale is the killer whale but humans are also a threat with fishing net entanglement and noise pollution.
