About the Book

English summary: Against the old humanism, the European humanism of the 18th century is characterized through a considerable expansion of its material basis. The direct, material and not wholly textual understanding of antiquity was promoted with great vigor. Numerous excavations, such as those in Herculaneum and Pompeii, opened up new possibilities for approaching the past. Antiquity achieved a high measure of visibility in the new collections as well as in contemporary paintings, sculptures, and architecture. A perspective on the then newly available discoveries and findings created the point of departure for conference and led to questions, for which the new material was needed, about the way in which that material was processed, and how it was reflected in the broader culture. These disseminated images, in sculptures and reliefs, on vases, plaster and cameos, in greater quality, changed the discourse about humans, their creativity, greatness and hubris (Pygmalion and Prometheus). Concentrating on the memorable, idealized images made broad layers of antiquity accessible and helped establish for the first time supplements and concurrences to the literary tradition. At what was the idealization of ancient humanity in the age of Enlightenment and revolution aimed? The idealizations were contrasted in the spaces of the conference to exemplary de-idealizations, which, even in recourse to ancient art and literature, began to emerge in contemporary theories and works of art. In the contrast with the historical present, this work is not only interested in criticism of glorified ideal images and projections, but seeks the concrete new constellations and figurations of the legacy of antiquity, as they take place within the contested field of between antiquity and modernity, going along with a depth of feeling about human self-understanding. Which intellectual achievements belong to the artists? Where do the boundaries of the humanistic image of humanity and its artistic formations lie? What was excluded and repressed?
