About the Book

Ce livre est le volume 1 (de 2) de l'édition complète en fac-similé de la version révisée de De Humani corporis fabrica ("De l'Architecture du corps humain") faite imprimée en 1555 par le célèbre anatomiste André Vésale (Andreas Vesalius). Elle corrige les erreurs que Vésale avait commises dans la précédente édition de 1543, et elle est augmentée (877 pages en tout, contre 714 pour l'édition de 1543). Le texte est toujours en latin.

Les deux versions de ce traité d'anatomie, la première de 1543, et la seconde de 1555 ici reproduite, constituent, ensemble, l'une des étapes les plus importantes de toute l'histoire de la médecine. Elles furent toutes deux imprimées à Bâle, en Suisse. L'exceptionnelle qualité de leurs impressions, et de leurs typographies, ne s'est jamais vue dans aucun autre livre publié avant 1543. Elle connut même une considérable amélioration dans cette seconde édition, laquelle ne fut que rarement reproduite par la suite, jusqu'à la large diffusion de l'imprimerie mécanisée durant le milieu du XIXe siècle. Avec sa publication de De Humani corporis fabrica, André Vésale apporta au monde une série d'images qui permit de voir et de comprendre pour la première fois la véritable architecture du corps humain.

Les gravures de l'édition originale font 33 centimètres de hauteur, c'est-à-dire quelques petits centimètres de plus que leurs reproductions pleine page, et en doubles pages, dans ce fac-similé. De Humani corporis fabrica est un volume unique de près de mille pages, lourd et de grand format. Avec de tels taille et poids, il ne pouvait être lu que sur un lutrin ou posé à plat sur une table. Il est divisé en sept parties que Vésale a nommées "livres", lesquelles auraient fort bien pu être imprimées en volumes séparés, en effet; celles-ci sont respectivement titrées (traduction du latin en français):

Livre 1: "Les Os et cartilages".
Livre 2: "Les Ligaments et muscles.
Livre 3: "Les Veines et artères".
Livre 4: "Les Nerfs".
Livre 5: "Les Organes de la nutrition et de la procréation".
Livre 6: "Le Coeur et les organes associés".
Livre 7: "Le Cerveau".

Ces sept livres sont suivis d'un court Errata post Libri Impressionem, puis d'un considérable index, très complet, de 46 pages.

De Humani corporis fabrica est un ouvrage aussi connu pour l'exceptionnelle qualité de ses gravures et grandes planches (plus de 250 en tout), dont la réalisation fut tout d'abord attribuée à Titien, puis, désormais, à son élève Jean-Stéphane Van Calcar.
Ce fac-similé a été réalisé à partir de l'une des éditions les mieux conservées (collection privée); aucune de ses pages n'est manquante, ni n'a été déchirée ou endommagée de quelque manière que ce soit. Cent quarante-trois exemplaires seulement de De Humani corporis fabrica sont connus et recensées dans le monde aujourd'hui. Cette rareté est expliquée par l'énorme coût de la réalisation de cet ouvrage à l'époque.
