About the Book

One of the root causes of human rights violation is discrimination & it lays at the root of world's most pressing human rights problems. Human Rights Day 2009 that was observed worldwide on 10 December, 2009 focused on non-discrimination. The first few famous words ???All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,??? of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights established 60 years ago, are the basis premise of international human rights law. However, the fight against discrimination remains a daily struggle for millions around the globe till today. Human Rights Education can become instrumental in changing society if it integrates itself with the people's way of transforming individual rights into new collective and community rights. Human Rights Education constitutes an essential contribution to the long-term prevention of human rights abuses and represents an important investment in the endeavour to achieve a society replete of justice in which all human rights of all persons are valued and respected resulting to elimination of violence and deprivation on the basis of discrimination. It will contribute a great deal in establishing national and international peace and friendship. Identifying problems, defining needs, clarifying norms, formulating and undertaking plans of action: this is the process of human rights education for empowerment. This book in a way is a small beginning to focus on the Human rights education for it can help to mobilize people in Indian context to follow up the space created by the UN Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2005) in enriching and strengthening this movement. The book deals in embarking on the various facets of human rights education from discussing the role of NGOs for the acknowle dgement of the dignity of the human beings and the promotion of individual rights at all the stages at the local, national and international level; in visualizing Women empowerment become a reality, yet education is the most powerful instrument of change and the only way to empower women and as a nation we have to realize the dream of Mahatma Gandhi, & I quote ???If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate an entire family.??? The book also throws light on the constitution of India is one of the most right based constitution in the world, drafted around the same time as the universal declarations of human rights (1948), the Indian constitution captures the essence of human rights in its preamble, and the sections on fundamental rights and directive principles of state policy. ICT which is also fast becoming a global power technology can help in propagating the awareness about the human rights which too are indispensable and universal. There is a need to include human right education in young generation though value based education system. The human rights education should be included in the all subjects so that all students of young generation could gain this knowledge and mould their thinking according to the principle of equality and freedom. The education based on human right shall help the student develop a positive self image and of others, create sensitivity to their environments it will also help student to accept the differences between the genders with some similarities this understanding will help in the creation of better relationship between both the genders and will avoid conflicts between them in the future. The human right education should not be just confined till teaching but it should be essential part our public and private life. As the new century advances, let us pledge ourselves to the protection and promotion of all human rights for all. Let us work together and educate people on Human Rights Education to build free and equitable societies where each human beings is given the opportunity and the means develop his or her potential to the fullest.About the AuthorMrs. Anjana Kaul is graduate from St. Bede's College, Shimla and has an M.A. (Economics), M.Ed., M.Phil.
