Success of mergers and acquisitions today largely gets influenced by HR functions. If we analyze the reasons for failure of mergers and acquisitions, two major issues that we observe in most of the cases are problems with culture integration and people integration. There are other problems like poor business integration, synergy, etc. But these problems are addressed well before the deal for mergers and acquisitions is finalized. Although it is possible to guard against culture and people integration issues through HR due diligence, HR problems may still continue till businesses of two organizations get fully integrated. Thus a thorough understanding of HR functions in relation to mergers and acquisitions is required.

About the Author

D.K. Bhattacharyya D.K. Bhattacharyya is Ph.D. in Management from University of Calcutta. He has served the industry of Training and Organizational Development function for about 15 years. Thereafter, for last two decades he has worked with several Management Institutes in India in various capacities like Director, Dean, Head of the Department, Professor, etc. Presently, he is attached as a Professor at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, India. He is also a visiting faculty of XLRI, Jamshedpur. Prof. Bhattacharyya has extensive consultancy experience in HR, Quality Management, Human Resource Planning, Compensation Design and Organizational Development, and Restructuring areas. He has published 28 books on HR management areas with Sage, Oxford, Pearson, PHI, Cengage, etc., and has contributed more than 100 papers in various journals of national and international repute.
