Año 1967. La casa 454 de la calle Angell, en Providence Rhode Island, de diseño victoriano, hipnotiza al matrimonio de Tom y Sophie Collins, los cuales buscan hogar para que todo vaya mejor al lado de su única hija Martha Collins, una dulce niña de once años muy despierta y vivaz.
A pesar de que la casa posee una historia urbana sobre sus previos dueños, los Collins deciden comprarla. En el camino, una noche que los Collins habían invitado al matrimonio Hall a cenar, envían a Martha, su hija, a jugar a la sala, donde esta es misteriosamente llamada por susurros que la llevan a estar frente a la caja de madera llamada Dybbuk, que inocentemente abre, para encontrar solo un péndulo muy extraño, una carta y una llave. En los próximos días ella es puesta frente a una niña fantasma llamada Martha, como ella; inspirándole confianza y ensenándole un misterioso juego que vuelve agresiva a la hija de Tom y Sophie Collins, luego de haber iniciado una extraña amistad con aquella niña a la que ella llamaba Martha, liberando así fuerzas malignas que reavivaran entes que habían permanecido en letargo, por medio de un juego infantil que hará temblar cada parte de la vieja casa y los que en ella se encuentran.
Abatidos por una misteriosa llamada de un tal Jeremiah Brown. Los Collins son llevados hasta los hermanos Nojowitz y otros profesionales que se ven envueltos en la más macabra historia de venganza, visualizada en muchas ocasiones por la médium Marilyn Rossner, que por auges del destino descubre un secreto que la casa ha ocultado por años. En todas las habitaciones de la casa victoriana se vivirán situaciones que llevarán a cada uno de los Collins a recordar momentos de sus vidas. Conocerán el dolor de perder lo que más aman, sin poder más que rogar porque todo pase, y lo que este en su casa desaparezca.
