About the Book

A follow up work on previous books, this edition speaks about exsiting standards for inspection and cleaning a fiber optic connection. Current standards are important, but also outdated at the time they are published. For rapidly evolving industries such as fiber optics, an existing standard can take five to seven years of expert input and then is in place for as long as ten years. For industries such as fiber optic high speed and ever increasing capacities if these standards are not outdated at the time they are published, surely they are at the end of their ten year life cycle! This book discusses various cleaning methods and procedures and proposes a new type standard that may be applicable and important for all such industries. The work goes on to discuss "best practice" in a way to "future proof" one of the most critical functions of a fiber optic deployment: testing which has accuracy in the actual cleaning process. The work has an open-ended invitation to all readers to participate in this new standards process which can begin as an Internet "blog" and then be approved by Subject Matter Experts before annual updates after an initial publication. Based on valuable existing standards, the author projects a six month time frame to initiate this new "Rapid Technology Standard".
About the Author: Thank you for purchasing this book. Ed Forrest has been involved in specification and applications engineering of various precision cleaning applications for more than 25 years. Retired in 2014, schooled to analyze precision and gross cleaning applications in a wide range of applications, he began development of a program that resulted in formal approvals at all major telecommunications providers. He has seven patents specifically in the area of fiber optic precision cleaning including end face cleaning and an innovative mid-span break-in for ribbon fiber. He has other patents pending. Active on fiber optic standards committees, considered SME in the study of fiber optic cleaning and inspection, his work is based on field experiences, needs of designers, crafts persons and production line. His practical thesis of "Five Zone Cleaning" is a look forward to times when high speed and capacity of fiber optic transmission (even more) will be impacted by a contaminated or improperly cleaned connections. He has uniquely researched inspection of a 4th and 5th Zone and influences of various debris and contamination positioned areas of the connector. He worked as an Electronics Manufacturer's Representative throughout the 1970's. He actively participated in early introduction of some of the fundamental electronic products in the changeover from analogue to solid state. These included componentry, consumer products, esoteric high fidelity, test equipment, and electronic products considered 'cornerstones' of the contemporary marketplace. He has production credits in that Industry He worked in a then-developing market segment in the Home Furnishings Industry. By coordinating North American and International Development, using an agency in Denmark he was able to work throughout Europe prior to the time of the EU. He opened new markets in Japan. He has production credits in that industry segment. Early career as a Technical Representative in Union Carbide Corporation's Automotive Consumer Products group with career-forming experiences that include introduction of Prestone(R) AntiFreeze as a Summer Coolant in a one year NASCAR race test and associated promotions. As well as, he worked in an innovative program with Standard Oil of Ohio(R) as SOHIO(R) introduced "self-service fueling" to the general market. He trained as an applications engineer answering customer complaints with personal visits and evaluations.
