About the Book

Autism is not a mental illness. In this book learn from an adult with autism how Autism was turned into a mental illness by insurance companies. Autism is a social disorder. Learn how your child receives no social treatments and only receives treatment for mental health. Learn how to advocate for your child and seek effective social skills treatments that help with living with Autism. Social context is very important when learning social skills. Autism is a social disorder. In Travis' experience with treatment for Autism he has only received medication management and talk therapy. There has been no effort to actually teach him social skills or advanced social concepts like social thinking and social context. All throughout this book series entitled "How Autism Became America's Most Prominent Mental Illness" you will learn how to better advocate for the social needs of your child on the Autism Spectrum. Travis shares personal stories of how his mental illness was created at the hands of doctors and professionals who did not understand Autism and out of their lack of knowledge did things and provided treatments that created a mental illness instead of helping to treat Autism. Travis shares what some of these things are that drove him to become so depressed and attempt suicide so that you the parent have a better understanding of Autism and how it might effect your child and also so you can be better prepared to present your case to insurance providers and medical professionals about how to best help your child. You the parent, know your child best. You should have a say in what is in your child's treatment plan. Included at the end of each book in this series is an advanced guide book about living with Autism. This helps parents of newly diagnosed children gain a better understanding of Autism and prepares you for the future your child might face. Thank you to all for taking interest in making the world a better place for those of us living with Autism. This version of the book also comes with an Advanced Autism Guide. This guide is great for parents and educators as well as medical professionals in gaining a better understanding about advanced Autism concepts like social thinking, social context, special interests, make-believe worlds, escaping into imagination, bullying, self-advocacy, and so many other important Autism issues.
About the Author: Travis is 28 years old, turning 29 at the end of March 2014. Life has been challenging due to having autism and mental illnesses that are related to Autism. Schizophrenia is a scary thing. When a person hears voices or sees things that others don't it is very difficult to lead a normal life and function normally. Schizophrenia much like Autism interferes with a person's ability for form and maintain meaningful friendships and relationships in life. Both Autism and Schizophrenia create significant social barriers that must be overcome. This book was written in hopes of helping parents who have children going through some of the similar issues to have someone to relate to. It's also for those people who have autism or have a mental illness of some kind and just do not feel like anyone understands them. The process of getting help is daunting on its own. I just now have found a counselor I can confide in at the age of 29 whom I feel is helping me with autism and schizophrenia. I've spent 7 years seeing over 100 counselors and several doctors who just could not understand what was going on. I have a few amazing friends now and am thankful for that. This book will give the reader a look at how Autism and Mental Illness can be related. While we cover it a lot in the book it is important to note that Autism is not a mental illness by itself however autism may very well be masked by a mental illness such as Schizophrenia. People suffering from Autism and mental illness need your help, love, and support. Hopefully in reading this you are able to offer them that support and love by understanding what they might be going through just a bit better.
