About the Book

Hotel Sitges es un poemario crítico, hermético, profético. Y cumple con dos ideales que el género habría dejado de lado en los últimos años, de forma gradual y paulatina; esto es, un compromiso ideológico y estético.

Además de estos matices, que juntos empujan sobre el proyecto y formación misma del autor, existe otro componente que enriquece al género. Se trata de la relación dialógica que Rodrigo Arriagada Zubieta establece con otros poetas y artistas (Rimbaud, Lihn, Baudelaire, Hopper...).

Consciente de ser un poeta sudamericano, y viviendo una temporada en la España académica, el malditismo experiencial se ejerce entonces desde dos vertientes: una oficial y pantanosa, que pertenece más bien a la tradición; y otra más localizada y específica, que resulta por tanto más personal y dolorosa:

De los otros es la vida
y lo demás que está fuera
nuestra gran ansiedad:
árboles que existen sin otoño
creciendo en medio de la paz en extinción.

Estos son los primeros versos del poemario, que dan inicio a la coyuntura central del libro, y que no es otra que el proyecto que intenta transformar vida en poesía, o bien distinguir la imagen o figura del poeta de la "de los otros".

Así las cosas, y lo que en principio parece que será una estadía en el Hotel Lautréamont (me refiero al cerrado y oscuro texto de John Ashbery, que nunca sale de sí mismo y de su propio juego metaliterario), en el trayecto del libro todas estas capas y proyecciones se irán desplazando una detrás de la otra.

De acuerdo con el orden de los poemas, es posible hablar de tres momentos -distinguidos arbitrariamente- bien notables y sucesivos.

Al principio encontramos el proyecto, la definición de lo que es o hace un poeta. Lo que podríamos entender como una declaración de principios, o tal vez la apertura de su mazo de cartas.

El desplazamiento se realiza a nivel propiamente experiencial, dando grandes impulsos desde el punto de vista estético sobre el oscuro arte y oficio de la poesía ("el poeta vive desde ya en el olvido / bajo un cielo muerto de palomas"; "Prefirió, en cambio, desaparecer en una cámara oscura (...) / y envejecer inviernos adentro / al margen de su tiempo"); y dando saltos más incómodos, proféticos, muy próximos a los de Rimbaud ("Hermosos son los siglos que vendrán. / Todo se expande arrastrado por un barco ebrio"; "Se avecina una nueva estación").

Una segunda capa, o desplazamiento, se realiza desde la propia formación del autor. Ahí encontramos a Mallarmé, o la creación de un poema a partir de un cuadro de Hopper (Soir Bleu, 1914). O más representativa resulta la máscara que utiliza, a modo de monólogo dramático y autorreferencial, de Charles Baudelaire en "Baudelaire, 1845: Homo Duplex"

Poeta-persona, mi doble naturaleza:
una espada de los ciervos en el bosque,
animales salvajes que se ejercitan en la esgrima
solitariamente acorralados.

Una tercera capa, y que interrelaciona tanto el proyecto como la formación del autor, se da desde el mismo acorralamiento que el poeta recibe no sólo desde su existencia "no poética", sino de la experiencia que resulta de vivir en otro país, precisamente en España.

El poeta existe al mismo tiempo en dos lugares, más allá de su Poeta-persona, y ya no recuerda si estaba "atrasado" en Santiago de Chile, o si era ella la ciudad que iba delante de su falsa claridad memoriosa ("Carnaval de Sitges").

De forma definitiva, y habiendo dado claras muestras rítmicas y estéticas, Arriagada Zubieta se arriesga a jugar con el fuego más profundo de todos, y que aún representa el único residuo gradual y efectivo de la colonización:

Nada se arriesga aquí en decir lo mismo en otras lenguas
a Europa le queda poco de Madre,
apenas un líquido amniótico
al que dirigirse a oscuras.
