Era el marques uno de esos hombres que, por su bello y serio rostro, su gracia viril, su elegancia correcta y sencilla, hacia espontaneamente brotar de los labios esta frase de trivial admiracion: tiene porte de principe. Y en efecto, dificil hubiera sido figurarselo detras de un mostrador, midiendo seda en un almacen o desempenando otra profesion cualquiera que no fuese la de diplomatico o la de soldado, que son, al fin, oficios de magnate. Por otra parte, habiase podido apreciar de que fuera capaz el marques de Pierrepont, vistiendo el uniforme militar, por cuanto en la guerra del 70 dio pruebas del mas cumplido valor, volviendo pacificamente, una vez terminada aquella, a emprender su vida habitual de parisiense y de dilettante a que lo impulsaban tendencias, gustos, falta de ambicion, y un poco tambien el deseo de complacer a cierta anciana tia, que no se contaba seguramente entre las fervientes admiradoras de la republica."
About the Author: Octave Feuillet (11 de agosto de 1821 - 29 de diciembre de 1890) fue novelista y dramaturgo frances. Feuillet nacio en Saint-Lo, Manche (Normandia). Su padre Jacques Feuillet era abogado prominente y secretario general de La Mancha, pero tambien un invalido hipersensible. Su madre murio cuando era un nino. Feuillet heredo parte de la excitabilidad nerviosa de su padre, aunque no en el mismo grado. Fue enviado al Liceo Louis-le Grand, en Paris, donde obtuvo una alta distincion, y estaba destinado al servicio diplomatico. En 1840 le dijo a su padre que planeaba ser un escritor en su lugar, y el anciano Feuillet renuncio a su hijo. Octave Feuillet regreso a Paris y vivio lo mejor que pudo al convertirse en periodista. En compania de Paul Bocage escribio las obras Echec et mat, Palma o la noche de Vendredi saint, y La Vieillesse de Richelieu. Su padre le perdono tres anos mas tarde y le concedio una asignacion. Feuillet disfruto de una comoda existencia en Paris y publico sus primeras novelas. La salud del anciano M. Feuillet declino mas, y llamo a su hijo a abandonar Paris y atenderlo en Saint-Lo. Esto fue un gran sacrificio, pero Octave Feuillet obedecio. En 1851, se caso con su prima Valerie Feuillet (nee Dubois), quien tambien fue escritora. Durante su "exilio" en Saint-Lo (rendido fastidioso por la mania de su padre para la soledad y el temperamento tiranico), Feuillet produjo algo de su mejor trabajo. Su primer exito definitivo vino en 1852, cuando publico la novela Bellah y produjo la comedia La Crise. Ambos fueron reimpresos de la Revue des deux mondes, donde muchas de sus novelas posteriores tambien aparecieron. Otras obras aclamadas son La Petite Comtesse (1857), Dalila (1857), y el popular Le Roman d'un jeune homme pauvre (1858). En 1857, finalmente regreso a Paris para supervisar el ensayo de una obra de teatro que habia adaptado de su novela Dalila. Al ano siguiente, hizo lo mismo cuando Un jeune homme pauvre estaba ensayando. Desafortunadamente, su padre murio en este momento cuando estaba fuera de casa. Feuillet y su familia se mudaron inmediatamente a Paris y se convirtieron en favoritos en la corte del Segundo Imperio. Sus piezas fueron interpretadas en Compiegne antes de que fueran dadas al publico, y en una ocasion la emperatriz Eugenie desempeno el papel de Mme de Pons en Les Portraits de la Marquise."
