El protagonista de la historia, Syme, es un policía que quiere luchar contra el crimen y se infiltra en un grupo anarquista. Pero el crimen al que se enfrenta es de naturaleza intelectual, y por ello más difícil de neutralizar. Uno de los policías involucrados en la misma misión que Syme expresa en qué consiste su tarea con unas palabras que recuerdan la denuncia intelectual que Chesterton había hecho en Herejes: Afirmamos que el criminal peligroso es el criminal culto; que hoy por hoy el más peligroso de los criminales es el filósofo moderno que ha roto con todas las leyes. En comparación con él, los ladrones y los bígamos casi resultan de una perfecta moralidad, ya que, por lo menos, aceptan el ideal humano fundamental, si bien lo procuran por caminos equivocados. El hombre que fue Jueves adelanta el contenido de Ortodoxia. Syme manifiesta lo que él considera el secreto del mundo, cuando se encuentra próximo el final de las peripecias sufridas en esta estrambótica aventura: ¿Quieren ustedes que les diga el secreto del mundo? Pues el secreto está en que sólo vemos las espaldas del mundo. Sólo lo vemos por detrás: por eso parece brutal. Eso no es un árbol, sino las espaldas de un árbol; aquello no es una nube, sino las espaldas de una nube. ¿No ven ustedes que todo está como volviéndose a otra parte y escondiendo la cara? ¡Si pudiéramos salirle al mundo por enfrente!... Syme está convencido -lo mismo que está Chesterton- de que el mal es tan malo, que, junto a él, el bien parece un mero accidente; el bien es tan bueno, que, junto a él, hasta el mal resulta explicable. El subtítulo de la novela "Una pesadilla", aporta la clave hermenéutica para la interpretación de El hombre que fue Jueves. Al tratar de ver el mundo de frente, en la perspectiva adecuada que permite descubrir lo que hay de auténtico bien, se disfruta de su atractivo y se le pierde el miedo. Todavía hay más: cuando se encuentra lo bueno, entonces se está en condiciones de dar una explicación coherente de lo malo. Así fue como Chesterton despertó de su pesadilla y vio el mundo en toda su luz. Cuando en su Autobiografía Chesterton evoca la publicación de El hombre que fue Jueves, aflora precisamente su preocupación por la cuestión de lo bueno: No me importaba demasiado el pesimista que se quejaba de que lo bueno existiera en una proporción tan pequeña, sino que me enfurecía -al borde del asesinato- el pesimista que preguntaba para qué servía lo bueno. En estas palabras se muestra una de las claves del credo chestertoniano: lo bueno tiene entidad por sí mismo. Cuando uno pretende buscar el para qué de lo bueno, como si hubiera un interés detrás o fuera un medio para otra cosa, lo bueno se diluye. Eso es justamente lo que los intelectuales contemporáneos no eran capaces de ver, porque habían perdido su capacidad de asombro.
