About the Book

Hitler and the Downfall of Democracy in the Weimar Republic presents a new analysis of the events that affected the Weimar Republic. The analysis was conducted by Professor Kevin M. Bronner who is a specialist in the public management and public finance aspects of government. The study uses critical thinking to analyse the structures and processes that led to the implementation of the Weimar Republic and its ultimate downfall and takeover by Adolph Hitler.

The key government documents used during the period are analyzed in depth. These include United States President Wilson's "Fourteen Points," the November 1918 Armistice that ended World War 1, the Treaty of Versailles, and the Weimar Republic Constitution. Each of these documents had fatal flaws that helped to lead to the downfall of the Weimar Republic.

The study analyzed the new political parties and other development that occurred in Germany during the 1920s including the new German Communist Party and the National Socialist German Workers Party of Adolph Hitler. The national election results in Germany are analyzed yearly from 1919 to 1933. These elections show how the once powerful Social Democratic Party in Germany began to lose power and how the Communist Party and the National Socialist Party began to thrive. The analysis shows how the German public supported the principles of democracy in the early 1920s but then turned against it by 1930.

Many interesting events from the 1920s are discussed including the military cooperation of Russian and Germany to develop secret weapons in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. This cooperation may have been a factor in the late 1930s when Germany and Russia shocked the world by entering into a military alliance and by the invasion of Poland in 1939. The study also shows how the western powers of the United States, France and England failed to develop a cohesive policy of confronting Germany over the Treaty of Versailles issues in the 1920s.

The study uses numerous sources that outline the merits and the flaws of the Weimar Republic that have been conducted over the past 100 years. Also, commentary from people who were directly involved with the Weimar Republic and the geopolitical events are also reviewed. The works of many key people are used such as those of Bernard Baruch, Rene Brunet, Konrad Heiden, Adolph Hitler, John Maynard Keynes, Victor Klemperer, Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Marx, William Shirer, and Max Weber are discussed.

Finally, there were some honest public administrators in Germany who tried to implement a new democracy for the benefit of the German people. Their effort failed but this book is dedicated to them.
