Em 1898, uma das últimas possessões da Espanha no Novo Mundo, Cuba, estava travando uma guerra pela independência, e embora Cuba estivesse tecnicamente isenta da Doutrina Monroe porque já era um território espanhol quando a Doutrina Monroe foi publicada, muitos americanos acreditavam que os Estados Unidos deveriam ficar do lado de Cuba contra a Espanha.

Embora a causa da explosão nunca tenha sido determinada, jornalistas amarelos na imprensa americana culparam a Espanha, alegando que o navio fora sabotado. O presidente McKinley foi incapaz de resistir à pressão popular depois que um relatório da Marinha dos Estados Unidos também afirmou que o navio havia sofrido uma explosão fora de seu casco que incendiou depósitos de pólvora dentro do navio. As investigações posteriores se mostraram inconclusivas, mas o Presidente McKinley foi forçado a aceitar a guerra com a Espanha.
O Congresso declarou guerra e a Marinha dos Estados Unidos iniciou o bloqueio a Cuba e Porto Rico. A frota dos EUA no Pacífico navegou para as Filipinas, então uma possessão espanhola. Apesar dos problemas de abastecimento das bases navais existentes até então, a frota americana derrotou a frota espanhola em Manila.
Embora os espanhóis tenham lutado contra o Exército dos EUA até um impasse em Porto Rico, a Espanha foi forçada a concordar com a paz depois que a Marinha dos EUA destruiu suas frotas do Pacífico e do Atlântico.
