About the Book

English summary: This monograph is based on the long-standing methods developed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Humanities as part of the project on the Tabula Imperii Byzantini (TIB) and on the lemmata derived as part of the project, relating to the toponyms of the historic landscape Macedonia as previously defined in the context of the sub-project 'Macedonia, northern part' (TIB 16). The author has deliberately chosen a mesoregion from the extensive area of TIB 16, namely the river valleys of the Strumica (Strumesnica) and the Kriva Lakavica between Stip in the northwest and Melnik in the east in order to illustrate his ideas on innovative future development of the historical-geographical exploration of the Byzantine Empire. This volume represents the connecting link in a long chain of historical-geographical research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Humanities as it further refines the current approach based on the tried and tested TIB method through targeted application of settlement theories and geo-informatics while also providing new perspectives that point in the direction of GIS, GIS databases and an increased online presence.
