Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, né le 2 juin 1740 à Paris et mort le 2 décembre 1814 à Saint-Maurice (Val-de-Marne), est un homme de lettres, romancier, philosophe et homme politique français, longtemps voué à l'anathème en raison de la part accordée dans son oeuvre à l'érotisme, associé à des actes de violence et de cruauté (tortures, incestes, viols, pédophilie, meurtres, etc.). L'expression d'un athéisme anticlérical virulent est l'un des thèmes les plus récurrents de ses écrits et la cause de leurs mises à l'index.Détenu sous tous les régimes politiques (monarchie, république, consulat, empire) il est emprisonné pour divers motifs, notamment pour dettes, empoisonnement et sodomie, puis enlèvement et abus sur des jeunes filles, et enfin pour modérantisme. Sur les soixante-quatorze années que dura sa vie, il passera un total de vingt-sept ans en prison ou asile de fous. Lui-mème, en passionné de théâtre, écrit: Les entractes de ma vie ont été trop longs . Il meurt à l'asile d'aliénés de Charenton Saint Maurice.De son vivant, les titres de marquis de Sade ou de comte de Sade lui ont été alternativement attribués, mais il est plus connu par la postérité sous son titre de naissance de marquis. Je voulus fuir, le serpent s'étendit au-devant de moi, il avait l'air de me demander grâce, il avait l'air de me jurer qu'il était bien loin d'avoir envie de me faire mal; je m'arrète, je considère cet animal; me voyant tranquille, il s'approche, il fait cent voltes à mes pieds plus lestes les unes que les autres, je ne puis m'empècher de porter ma main sur lui, il y passe délicatement sa tète, je le prends, j'ose le mettre sur mes genoux, il s'y blottit et paraît y dormir.
