The 64th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (Yates' Sharpshooters) was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, as a Battalion of 4 Companies, on December, 1861. Two more Companies mustered in December 31, 1861.
The 64th was originally issued 1841 Rifles, which were appropriate for their skirmishing origin. They were later mainly issued 1861/63 Springfields. By individual purchase the unit's members bought Henry repeating rifles, which they had during the North Carolina Campaign with Sherman.
The regiment served entirely in the west, participating in the battles from the Siege of Vicksburg, the Kentucky Campaign, Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and the Carolina's Campaign.
They mustered out on July 11 and were discharged at Chicago, Illinois, July 18, 1865.
