Se trata de un historia que se mueve en torno a tres ejes. En primer lugar, los recuerdos de la niñez del autor, que son los que tendría cualquier otro muchacho en la tierra que le vio nacer, pues es difícil que alguien pueda renegar del lugar donde fue alumbrado y pasó sus primeros años. Pero en este caso, con el aliciente de que el pueblo de La Millariega (y su parroquia de La Pereda) son unos exquisitos vergeles capaces de embelesar los sentidos de cualquiera y, con mayor motivo, de un párvulo de pocos años. Al mismo tiempo se van dejando algunas pinceladas de como vio el autor, en aquella época y desde su punto de vista, el nacional sindicalismo que le tocó vivir.Pero en realidad el motivo de este libro está en la cruz de madera que en el año 1958 fue colocada en la cumbre de Las Aurales y la pequeña investigación sobre si guardaría alguna relación con otra latina tallada en la roca. El hilo conductor es esa cruz y la foto que el autor de este libro (con 16 años y siendo corresponsal de prensa) le hizo, caída en el suelo, en el año 1970, publicando la noticia en el periódico como 'La cruz que, pese al fuego, no ardió', lo que fue muy celebrado por los estamentos eclesiásticos de la época. Pues bien, 44 años después, gracias sobre todo a la ayuda de dos mujeres que se implicaron lo suficiente en la historia (y a las que, prácticamente, se debe el que este pequeño libro vea la luz, Elvira Lorences y Carmina Millariega), se retomó la ruta que aquellos devotos habían seguido en 1958, en esta ocasión (al parecer como en aquella), con mucha niebla y en condiciones no muy favorables. Se hizo un reportaje de la pequeña aventura y se sacaron una serie de conclusiones. Favorecido todo ello con la aparición al final de un personaje emblemático que vivió en La Millariega y La Pereda, José González ('Pepín El Sacristán'), que aportó nuevas historias muy útiles para la conclusión del trabajo. De todo ello, no sin dificultades, pues tampoco existía un gran argumento, salió este pequeño libro que pretende ser un homenaje a la tierra donde nació su autor y a sus gentes: 'Verde y frondosa ladera // de mi nacimiento, //primer conocimiento //etéreo, noble tierra era. // Idílica y mágica ladera // bosque con encanto, //río que embelesa tanto, // aquí yo te quisiera. // Si el recuerdo convirtiera // cualquier soplo de viento //que susurra sentimiento // y junto a mi languideciera' (José Millariega).
