Estos cuentos jataka son una antigua colección de relatos muy cortos, vienen de 1era rueda de la enseñanza del Buda; tiene la importancia en el conjunto de la literatura budista. Muchos occidentales piensan que el budismo no es una religión, sino más bien un tipo de filosofía, pero en realidad el budismo es una religión, porque su enseñanza fundamental es explicar el origen del universo, es decir, el verdadero yo eterno que existe en cada uno de nosotros (tathagatagarbha). El budismo no considera al verdadero yo como el Dios único de todos los seres. Según el budismo, el que ha encontrado su verdadero yo y es capaz de probar su existencia, se da cuenta de que este verdadero yo, al final, siempre ha estado ahí y por lo tanto no lo ha encontrado realmente y jamas lo ha perdido. Este practicante es llamado en el budismo un maestro iluminado. Esto es muy diferente de la visión monoteísta de que no se puede estar especulando sobre Dios. ¿Por qué el budismo no cree en un dios universal? Si hay un solo Dios, entonces el paraíso y el infierno fueron creados por Dios, al igual que los hombres y los animales, y por lo tanto ir al paraíso, al infierno o quedarse en la tierra es como decir que siempre estás con Dios. Por lo tanto, no es importante si una persona se comporta bien o mal en su vida, porque en el fondo, uno nunca deja a Dios. El budismo nos enseña que cada persona tiene su propio y verdadero yo (tathagatagarbha). Este verdadero Yo es innato e indestructible. Nuestras buenas y malas acciones se convierten en semillas que se plantan en este verdadero Yo, y que cuando llega el momento, las manifiesta, les permite encarnarse en una experiencia. Las semillas kármicas se convierten en frutos kármicos. Por eso el budismo considera que nuestro comportamiento, nuestras palabras, nuestros pensamientos de hoy generarán consecuencias más tarde, porque la forma en que tratas a los demás hoy es la forma en que te tratarán en el futuro. Aquí es donde radica la importancia de construir un buen karma con los demás. Así es como la ley del karma (causa y efecto) funciona según el budismo.
