Para comenzar, no todos los gangsters eran italianos; y los que sí lo eran, no procedían mayoritariamente de Sicilia. Hubo irlandeses, holandeses y de otras partes. Y los judíos representaron una muy buena parte de ellos. Lo de Sicilia nos lo han hecho creer las películas de Hollywood. Por otra parte, Al Capone no fue el peor de todos, sino el que las películas, como Los Intocables, dieron mucha fama. Además, Capone no era siciliano, sino que nació en Brooklyn, Nueva York, y sus padres procedían de distintas partes de Italia: Nápoles y Salerno. Y tampoco Elliot Ness fue el terror de los gangsters, sino Joseph Dominick Pistone, alias Donnie Brasco, de quien daremos su historia. Respecto a El Padrino, la famosísima película sobre gangsters, debemos hacer notar que mucho de lo que aparece en la película está tomado de la realidad. Si lees las vidas de los que aquí se hallan, verás que algunos detalles de ellas las has visto en ese film. Los vamos a mencionar. En este estudio, trataremos desde poco antes de nacer La Mafia, hasta, (más o menos, dependiendo del caso), la Conferencia de Apalachin, en 1957; lo que se puede considerar la Mafia Clásica. Lo que sucedió después... se puede ver en El Padrino, aunque son estos mismos eventos, si bien con fechas posteriores. Lo que aquí se relata es un compendio de todo, ya que quizá sería aburrido entrar en mucho detalle. Se armaría una enciclopedia. Se intenta tocar todo lo interesante, pero sin profundizar mucho. La Mafia no es la simple suma de nombres y fechas; de asesinatos y traiciones. Para entenderla, hay que conocer todo lo que influyó en su formación: como La Mano Negra, importada de Italia, o La Ley Seca, que hizo millonarios a los mafiosos. Y para entender a sus personajes, hay que saber algo de sus costumbres en Sicilia, y también de lo que encontraron a su llegada a Nueva York. Por eso, aquí se tratan muchos eventos y circunstancias, no únicamente la vida y obra de gente con nombres muy sonoros. En este estudio se menciona constantemente Castellammarese War, o Guerra de Castellammare, entre Masseria y Maranzano. Tal vez se haga repetitivo, pero ese suceso fue el que marcó la historia de las pandillas de Nueva York; lo que conformó las Cinco Familias; el evento que llevó a Lucky Luciano a ser el más grande gangsters que ha existido, más que Al Capone. Todos los famosos capos tuvieron algo que ver con esa Guerra. O murieron antes, y fueron origen de la matanza; o los asesinaron durante el conflicto; o se fortalecieron luego. La Guerra de Castellammare cambió el concepto de bandas al de familias, y de grupitos a fuertes organizaciones. Nació La Comisión, o Sindicato Nacional del Crimen. Por ello, se la menciona mucho, aunque los hechos se relatan en partes, en la biografía de cada quién, y como les fue en la confrontación. Los muchos muertos en la Guerra, y las pérdidas millonarias de los Gangsters, además de la posibilidad de ser desplazados por irlandeses y judíos, obligaron, a algunos, a terminarla abruptamente. La solución fue tajante, como veremos.
