Una vez de vuelta de Israel, iba a decir que sólo allí comprendí la Sagrada Escritura; pero sólo ahora, leyendo el libro Jerusalén: La Biografía de Simon Sebag Montefiore, puedo decir que entendí lo que significan Israel, Jerusalén, Nazaret... por qué esta tierra bañada en sangre es llamada Tierra Santa por todos los representantes de las tres religiones abrahámicas, y por qué de toda esta tierra, la verdadera santidad es Jerusalén.

También porque como dijo Benjamin Disraeli:

"Ver Jerusalén es ver la historia del mundo; es más, es ver la historia del cielo y de la tierra".

Creo que cada uno de nosotros, debería (en la medida de lo posible) visitar este fabuloso país al menos una vez porque, la Tierra de Israel es el centro del mundo; Jerusalén es el centro del país; el Templo Sagrado es el centro de Jerusalén; el Santo de los Santos es el centro del Templo Sagrado; el Arca de la Ley es el centro del Santo de los Santos, y la primera piedra sobre la que se creó el mundo está delante del Arca Sagrada.

Me he propuesto escribir una historia de Tierra Santa para el lector general, ateo o creyente, cristiano, musulmán o judío, sin una motivación política (o religiosa), incluso en estos tiempos de conflicto. Contaré la historia cronológicamente, rastreando la existencia de naciones, hombres y mujeres, soldados y profetas, poetas y reyes - y las familias que hicieron esta tierra.

Y así es exactamente como lo hago: "desde el rey David hasta Benjamín Netanyahu, desde el nacimiento del judaísmo, el cristianismo y el islam hasta el conflicto palestino-israelí", contando la historia desde sus inicios.

A lo largo de más de 500 páginas, este libro es un gran rompecabezas en el que se entrelazan fragmentos de nuestro conocimiento general con cosas menos conocidas o quizá ni siquiera sospechadas, haciendo que varios centenares de personajes, algunos ya famosos, otros menos e injustamente conocidos, pasen ante los ojos, reviviendo imágenes de la vida antigua, costumbres, hábitos, leyes.

Preguntas tentadoras sobre teología reciben respuestas plausibles y puntos oscuros de la historia encuentran posibles rayos de luz esclarecedora.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, aprenderá cómo han transcurrido miles de años de fe, masacres, fanatismo y coexistencia de varias religiones. Cómo llegó a ser Jerusalén, esa pequeña y remota Ciudad Santa, centro del mundo y hoy clave para la paz en Oriente Próximo.

En un momento en que aumenta la presión mundial sobre el Estado judío, quiero llamar su atención sobre las verdades bíblicas acerca del estatus especial de este pueblo. El Estado de Israel, que hoy sigue siendo un problema mundial, se convertirá, según las promesas divinas, en una necesidad mundial, una bendición para toda la tierra.
