La Historia de las Sociedades Secretas de Vicente de la Fuente es una obra de referencia sobre el siglo XIX español. A más de 150 años de su publicación, sigue siendo lectura obligada para el estudio de la presencia del carbonarismo, la masonería y de la Sociedad de los Caballeros Comuneros. Todo aquel que intenta sinceramente investigar tales estos temas, antes o después, va a parar a estas páginas. La obra se publicó inicialmente en 1874 en cinco volúmenes y posteriormente fue reimpresa en 1933. Dado el tiempo transcurrido, la lengua castellana y la ortografía han evolucionado más de lo que suele pensarse. De ahí que nos hayamos visto ante la disyuntiva de respetar completamente el texto tal como lo escribió su autor, o intentar realizar una corrección completa y una adaptación conforme a las reglas ortográficas del siglo XXI. Lo primero equivalía añadir dificultades de lectura y arriesgarnos a que no todas las partes fueran completamente comprensibles; y, en cuanto a lo segundo, suponía restar algo del espíritu de la época en la que fue escrito. Por tanto, optamos por realizar las modificaciones ortográficas que hoy serían consideradas como "faltas", respetando algunas fórmulas de expresión actualmente en desuso, pero, en cualquier caso, correctas. Lo que el lector tiene entre las manos es, sencillamente, una joya de la historiografía española del siglo XIX. Es importante destacar, una y mil veces, que la mayor parte de hechos que se narran son próximos a la época en la que se escribió (a partir, claro está del Capítulo III). Hoy, algunos historiadores, progresistas, marxistas o, incluso, masónicos, tienden a reconstruir la historia del XIX prescindiendo de la influencia de las sociedades secretas: consiguen que no se entienda nada. Ni se entiende cómo se produjo la pérdida de las colonias americanas, ni se entiende dónde salieron los partidos progresistas, liberales y republicanos del XIX, ni siquiera de entender cómo pudieron urdirse tantas y tantas conspiraciones o por qué estallaron las "bullangas" que alteraron la paz cívica especialmente a mediados de la centuria. La excusa es que la historiografía debe basarse en documentos "objetivos" y estos, claro está, al tratarse de "sociedades secretas" (secretas en tanto que no dejan documentos de su actividad) no existen... Y, sin embargo, Vicente de la Fuente nos demuestra lo contrario: los documentos existen, los testimonios están ahí para quien quiere leerlos y atribuirles el rango de "piedras" con los que se construye la historia. La obra de Vicente de la Fuente no es una recopilación de rumores, anécdotas y leyendas urbanas sobre la masonería: tiene el valor de la auténtico, avalado por testimonios documentales y también por declaraciones del propio autor y de sus amigos. No era un hombre que creyera cualquier cosa que le contaban o que leía: pensaba, meditaba, discurría y atribuía valor al dato en función de muchos elementos, o simplemente le negaba validez cuando correspondía. A lo largo de estas 1.500 páginas, Vicente de la Fuente demuestra ser un hombre ecuánime, pero, sobre todo, objetivo. Y en historia, no hay valor más elevado que la objetividad.
