Y es que ahora sabemos que su poder no reside simplemente en conseguir anular al contrario con un golpe certero, sino en mejorar nuestra mente y equilibrar nuestro espíritu. Con su práctica, el alumno entra en un mundo casi místico, en donde la violencia que parece formar parte de su esencia termina convirtiéndose en el control de la agresividad, por lo que podríamos asegurar que los artistas marciales son menos violentos que, por ejemplo, los aficionados al boxeo. El secreto está en el esfuerzo día a día, en la repetición miles de veces de la técnica aparentemente más sencilla, y en la meditación obligada antes y después de cada entrenamiento. Junto a ello, el alumno aprende a resolver sus problemas él solo, a no quejarse ante el dolor físico que le llegará, a respetar al adversario menor, y a no sentir pánico cuando se encuentre con alguien superior. Esa lucha es, pues, más interna que externa, pero indudablemente su cuerpo conseguirá una transformación positiva tan alta como su mente. Y paralelo a este mundo individual, los gimnasios (Dojos) de artes marciales involucran frecuentemente a sus alumnos en competiciones deportivas, en donde se mide, más que la fuerza, la precisión y la oportunidad. En estos torneos no hay contacto físico dañino -al menos deliberado-, por lo que suponen una buena opción para aquellos que desean poner a prueba lo aprendido meses antes. Pero si lo que quieren es dejarse de reglas y asumir lo que supone una pelea casi real, podrán participar en una gran cantidad de deportes al contacto, en donde el K.O. está algo más controlado que en el boxeo inglés. Tan amplia es la oferta en el mundo de las artes marciales, que los practicantes suelen cambiar frecuentemente de estilo y profesor, pues en la variedad encuentran siempre el progreso para convertirse en un buen cinturón negro. Normalmente empiezan con el Kárate o el Judo, y una vez alcanzada la maestría necesaria se derivan, o bien a artes marciales de contacto como el Full Contact, o a otras en donde prima el desarrollo espiritual, como es el caso del Tai-Chi. Las opciones le llevarán, por tanto, al Kárate y a su idea del golpe único y definitivo; al Taekwondo con sus patadas voladoras que rivalizan con las posturas del Kung-fú imitando a los animales; o al Judo, que proyecta e inmoviliza al adversario, mientras que el Aikido canaliza el impulso de la agresión en su favor.
