Vista de Extremadura. Una de sus añciones fué la caza, y distingurose como tirador. Cuando maestro, era a la vez amigo de sus discípulos. En su conversación mostrábase ameno, satírico, bonachón y chispeante. Leyó á Balmes, al padre Ceferino, fray Luis de León, Zorrilla, Núñez de Arce y Vicente Medina, con cuya C ansera le ocurrió escribir en jerga extremeña dialectal. Dejó al morir en Guijo tres criaturas. Su her mano Luis conserva todas las cartas que le escribió y copia de cuanto compuso. Don José González Castro (crotontilo), médico de Béjar, redactor de El Adelanto, de Salamanca, publicó una serie de cartas de Gabriel y Galán y posee una colección muy extensa. También guardan cartas la familia del señor Méndez Polo, que fué bibliotecario de la Universidad de Salamanca; su hermano don Baldomero Gabriel y Ga lán (ferraz, 1-3, Madrid), don Miguel de Unamuno, don José Sánchez Rojas (alba de Tormes). Su discípulo don Mariano de Santiago Ci vid'ades ha publicado un Epistolario de G. Y G., Madrid, 1918, y desea ria continuarlo en otros tomos. Don Mariano de Santiago, su discípulo, en cartas al autor: Don José María G. Y Galán nació el año 1870 en Frades de la Sierra, partido de Sequeros. Sus padres eran acomodad°s labradores, de lo más riquillo del pueblo, teniendo dos hermanas casadas y tres hermanos, el mayor, Baldomero, es abogado del Estado en Ma drid, y el pequeño, Luis, fué siempre labrador; ya no está en Frades; la hermana que vive ha sido desgraciada en su matrimonio con el médico del pueblo, del que se separó después de tener varios hijos.'escos disgus tos hicieron gran mella en la vida del poeta, ya muy propenso a disgus tarse por cualquier cosa, y en sus cartas también hace referencia a ello. A los doce años de edad vino a Salamanca y entró como dependiente en un comercio. Un dia me contó que vendieron en el comercio una man tilla ydij0 uno de los dependientes: Ya sacamos para el almuerzo, y su alma delicada le impidió seguir en esa profesión, creyéndola incom patible con su honradez. Comenzó la carrera de maestro, que hizo con gran provecho; a los diez y siete años ganó la escuela de Guijuelo, y alli practicó por vez primera. Siempre fue la religiosidad lo distintivo de sus enseñanzas, pues su lema era educar el corazón antes que la inteligencia. El exceso de trabajo en estas Oposiciones minó su salud, y estuvo muy delicado, padeciendo siempre fuertes dolores de cabeza, como su madre, que fué muy guapa é inteligente, y también tenía añ ciones poéticas. Su padre, a quien llamaban el montaraz, casi siempre vistió de calzón; era bajito y nervioso, bien relacionado con los políti cos del partido, y con tanto amor propio, que al casarse Baldomero con una señorita de Zamora, parece que la familia de ella, emparen tada con la aristocracia, se sentía algo humillada con la boda, y al ele gir reina de los Juegos Florales de Salamanca, dijo al poeta: Elige á tu cuñada. Y con el traje de reina la dijo: No se te olvide que si eres reina es por un charro. Siendo maestro normal hizo oposicio nes, y el primer lugar estaba indeciso'entre el hoy sacerdote don Manuel Marin Rojo, maestro de Cantalapiedra, y él; el presidente del Tribunal hizo que el ejercicio oral durara doble que lo acostumbrado.
