Durante el medio siglo anterior, Atenas se había posicionado como potencia marítima y desarrollado en las artes y las ciencias hasta convertirse en un hito de la civilización.El autor recurre preferencialmente a los discursos y a las percepciones directas de los participantes en la guerra, analiza el papel de la población y su influencia desde los puntos no implicados en el conflicto -entre la democracia ateniense y la oligarquía espartana-, mediante reuniones denominadas asambleas populares, e incorpora -por primera vez como fuente a la cual recurrir para escribir historia- la psicología del comportamiento humano en lugar del designio de los dioses que era, hasta entonces, la principal fuente. De hecho es también el primero que advierte que no escribe tal historia como narración del momento, sino a manera de una persuasión para todos los tiempos que debe tenerse en cuenta en situaciones similares en el futuro, suceda donde suceda. Se interesaba más por las ideologías de los dos contrincantes, tanto en la guerra como en épocas de paz, que por la narración de los escenarios y sucesos bélicos.El relato llega a su máximo interés en la parte final de la obra, dedicada a la expedición de los atenienses a Sicilia, en que denuncia las incompetencias y las traiciones que condujeron a un desastre final, en una narración de innegable grandeza, que llevó al gran historiador británico Macaulay a sostener que se trataba, no sólo del más grande libro de historia de todos los tiempos, sino de la cima del arte humano.Historia de la Guerra del Peloponeso, es de obligada lectura y estudio en todos los programas de educación superior en Historia, Ciencia Política y Relaciones Internacionales del presente, pues es considerado uno de los clásicos más influyentes e importantes de la historia de la humanidad.
