Preface J'ai toujours beaucoup aime les histoires fantastiques. L'incroyable est une des formes de la poesie. Le reel, lorsqu'il se deforme par l'hallucination ou le reve, devient tout aussitot enorme et plus attirant peut-etre que la verite meme. Tels ces visages que certains miroirs concaves ou convexes allongent ou depriment de facons bizarres. Ils nous fascinent. On les regarde avec une fixite un peu hagarde, tandis qu'on laisserait peut-etre passer une jolie femme sans l'admirer. Le fantastique hypnotise. Quand j'etais enfant, j'ai souvent entendu raconter l'histoire de mon grand-oncle Gillet, mort grenadier de la garde. A Nantes, quand il rentrait chez sa mere, il avait l'habitude de prendre chaque soir un peu de sable et de le jeter, du dehors, contre la vitre pour avertir qu'il arrivait. On courait a la porte du jardin et on ouvrait. Cadet (c'etait le cadet de la famille) entrait, joyeux. Un soir, on entend le bruit du gravier contre la vitre. Mon arriere-grand-mere se leve joyeuse et dit: - C'est Cadet! Cadet etait pourtant soldat a l'armee et loin de France. Bah! c'est qu'il revenait! Et la mere court ouvrir la porte. Personne! - Mon Dieu! dit l'aieule, il est arrive malheur a Cadet. Et elle regarda sa montre. En effet, a cette heure meme, a l'heure crepusculaire, entre chien et loup, le pauvre garcon recevait d'un chasseur tyrolien, cache derriere une botte de foin, une balle qui le tuait net. C'etait le soir de Wagram. Il n'y avait pas deux heures que Napoleon l'avait, de sa main, decore sur le champ de bataille d'une petite croix detachee de sa poitrine. Je l'ai la, cette petite croix. Je la regarde tandis que j'ecris. Elle me rappelle cette inoubliable histoire qui a fait tant d'impression sur mon enfance. Voila bien pourquoi, sans doute, quand j'ai debute, mes premiers recits ont ete des contes fantastiques. On les retrouverait dans la collection du Diogene ou nous fantastiquions a qui mieux mieux, le poete Ernest d'Hervilly, le romancier Jules Lermina et moi. Edgar Poe etait notre dieu et Hoffmann son prophete. Nous etions fous d'histoires folles. C'etait le bon temps. Il n'est point passe, je le vois, ce bon temps-la, puisque Jules Lermina, fidele a nos frissons d'antan, publie ce curieux et poignant recueil d'Histoires incroyables. Manes de Nathaniel Hawthorne, et de l'auteur de l'Assassinat de la rue Morgue, voila un Francais, tres francais, qui vous a pourtant derobe le secret du fantastique, ce naturel sublime! Voila un Gaulois qui a le sens du cauchemar saxon et dont les inventions font se dresser sur la peau du lecteur ces petites granulations speciales qu'on appelle la chair de poule. Jules Lermina, ne le 27 mars 1839 a Paris et mort le 23 juin 1915 a Paris, est un romancier et journaliste francais. Biographie Apres avoir exerce divers metiers et tente sans succes de se lancer dans les affaires, il entame une carriere journalistique en 1859 et s'engage du cote des socialistes, ce qui lui vaut plusieurs sejours en prison et le soutien de Victor Hugo. Ses premiers romans paraissent sous le pseudonyme de William Cobb. Il laisse une uvre abondante, qui comprend des romans d'aventures, dont notamment des suites aux Mysteres de Paris d'Eugene Sue et au Comte de Monte-Cristo d'Alexandre Dumas, ainsi que des romans policiers, des contes inspires par son interet pour les sciences occultes, un dictionnaire biographique et un dictionnaire d'argot. Il est egalement l'auteur de L'ABC du libertaire edite par la colonie libertaire L'Essai d'Aiglemont et publie dans le journal Le Libertaire. Il est, de ce fait, parfois presente comme un ecrivain anarchiste."
