Ils ont su unifier les peuples et les territoires qu'ils ont conquis et ont fait du royaume de France déjà une terre d'asile, même s'il n'y eut pas de mouvement migratoire significatif entre 650 et 1850, du fait notamment de la faiblesse des moyens de transport de l'époque.
D'abord frontalière, allemande, belge, l'immigration s'est diversifiée à la fin du XIXe siècle, et plus encore après la Première Guerre mondiale, pour répondre aux efforts de reconstruction du pays. Durant tout le XXe siècle, au gré des besoins en main d'oeuvre de la France, des difficultés politiques de ses voisins européens, de la décolonisation, de nouvelles arrivées se sont succédé et ont imprégné la société française.
Depuis les trois dernières décennies l'immigration s'est accélérée et a changé de nature, le paysage migratoire s'est considérablement diversifié en raison de l'afflux de réfugiés économiques ou politiques arrivés d'Amérique latine, d'Asie et d'Afrique.
Aujourd'hui en 2020, 47,5 % des immigrés vivant en France sont nés en Afrique, 32,2 % sont nés en Europe. Les pays de naissance les plus fréquents sont l'Algérie, le Maroc, le Portugal, la Tunisie, l'Italie, la Turquie, et l'Espagne.
Parler d'immigration a toujours été un sujet épineux à aborder, et quand on ose le faire, le débat est difficile, il débouche très vite sur une série d'anathèmes, de préjugés, de caricatures, au détriment des analyses qui tiennent compte, justement, des complexités de cette question. Les tenants d'une politique de fermeté en la matière sont traités de racistes, de xénophobes, les autres de laxistes, naïfs, aveugles quant aux risques d'une émigration trop importante qui n'aurait plus la possibilité, ou la volonté, de s'intégrer dans notre « vivre ensemble » républicain.
