Les sites archéologiques de Serbie à Majdanpek, Jarmovac et Plonik de la culture Vina fournissent les premières preuves de cette métallurgie extractive, remontant aux sixième et cinquième millénaires avant JC. Le site de Belovode contient les premiers exemples connus de fusion de cuivre, comme une hache en cuivre datant de 5500 av. D'autres sites, tels que Palmela au Portugal, Los Millares en Espagne et Stonehenge au Royaume-Uni, montrent des preuves de métaux anciens dès le troisième millénaire avant notre ère. Ces premiers métaux étaient soit des éléments isolés, soit des alliages naturels. Le bronze, un alliage produit à partir de cuivre et d'étain, est un meilleur métal. La transition vers la technologie de l'âge du bronze s'est produite vers 3500 av. L'arsenic a été fréquemment trouvé comme impureté dans ces minerais naturels. Le manque de bronzes à l'étain en Asie occidentale avant 3000 avant JC est révélateur de la rareté des minerais de cuivre / étain dans la région. Les armées à la recherche d'un armement supérieur ont marqué l'histoire de la métallurgie après l'âge du bronze. La fabrication des alliages supérieurs qui ont permis la création d'armures et d'armes supérieures a profité aux États d'Eurasie. L'Inde a fait des progrès majeurs dans les domaines de l'alchimie et de la métallurgie à l'époque antique. Cependant, comme c'est typique dans l'étude de l'histoire ancienne, les débuts définitifs sont difficiles à cerner et de nouvelles découvertes sont toujours faites.
