About the Book

English summary: What we know about Latin literature, and which is presented to us in this flawless chronological framework, is a construction, an appropriation, the fruit of a heroic conquest, works saved from oblivion through the effort of transcribers, rediscovered by the likes of tireless manuscript hunters like Petrarch and Poggio Bracciolini, restored to their textual and historic authenticity by philologists consumed by ardor eruditionis, circulated by publishers and translators, and constantly reinterpreted and reinvented through a long series of vagaries and impassioned debate updating the canon. This debate ventured beyond the Academy and inflamed the Republic of Letters, notably mobilising such privileged readers as the leading writers of the day. Thus these pages, which tell the story behind this history, not only bring us Virgil and Ovid along with Politian, Justus Lipsius and Lachmann, but also such greats as Montaigne, Hugo, Laurent Tailhade and Huysmans.Made possible by the countless endeavours kindled, beyond Humanism, by interest in the history of their reception, the chosen viewpoint directed the flow of this book. The first part focuses on writers whose polyvalent work distinguishes them from the rest, and who are grouped under the title - borrowed from Dante - "la bella scuola." Their four names, which have never lost their lustre, remain major stars in the sphere of Latin literature: Virgil, Cicero, Horace and Ovid. Next is a vast zodiac of names representing prose and poetry's leading genres: Philosophy (Lucretius, Seneca, the Platonisms), History, Theatre, Novels, the Poetic Genres (Epic, Elogy, Satire, Epigramme, Fable and Silva, the "Minor" Poets), Letter Writers and Orators, and lastly the Theory of Rhetoric. A third part is devoted to Technical (Pliny, Vitruvius, etc.) and erudite (polygraphers and grammarians) literature. Penned in Pierre Laurens' scholarly and sensitive style and enriched with numerous translated excerpts, the work's fourth and final part highlights this stardust known as "Unknown Latin Literature."
