La penuria editorial de México, correspondiente al mes de julio de 1986 (al inicio de este trabajo), se reflejaba sumariamente en el siguiente dato: De las 139 empresas que expusieron en la XV Feria Metropolitana del Libro, una sola exhibía un libro biográfico acerca del Libertador: Hidalgo. La vida del héroe, de Luis Castillo Ledón, y eso porque se trataba de sobrantes del tiraje que hizo en 1985 el Instituto Nacional de Estudios Históricos de la Revolución Mexicana, con motivo del 175 aniversario de la iniciación de la Independencia.El Fondo de Cultura Económica, asociado con la Secretaría de Educación Pública, exponía las memorias del coetáneo de Hidalgo, Pedro García, en impresión de 1982; el Instituto Michoacano de Cultura -el único organismo participante de provincia-, tampoco se distinguió con alguna obra dedicada al Rector nicolaita.A mayor abundamiento, las novedades de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, no incluían a Hidalgo, ni El Colegio de México, El Colegio Nacional, Siglo XXI Editores, Ediciones ERA, Ediciones de Cultura Popular y otras de las más fuertes casas abocadas a la investigación historiográfica del país. Las respectivas secciones mostraban lo más representativo de su repertorio, pero andar tras una biografía del prócer penjamense o de un tema conexo, equivalía a buscar una hoja en aquel bosque literario.En las librerías de funcionamiento permanente y que gozan de prestigio, los resultados fueron análogos: En los estantes de una docena de ellas, fue una lotería dar con el tomo de Francisco Bulnes, La Guerra de Independencia. Hidalgo-Iturbide, patrocinado por la Universidad Iberoamericana.En incursiones que el autor de la presente recopilación efectuó en las bibliotecas públicas, se topó con parecidas dificultades: En la Biblioteca Nacional, el tarjetero correspondiente registraba un relativamente copioso número de fichas; de allí se extrajo el más rico acervo de pensamientos, pero fue materialmente imposible localizar títulos como La vida de don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, de Arturo Arnáiz y Freg, que por razones elementales debería figurar en sus estantes, al igual que otros documentos vanamente registrados.Mayores vicisitudes se corrieron en otras bibliotecas, como la del Congreso de la Unión, o la "Melchor Ocampo", de la Cámara de Senadores, o la Biblioteca de México, o la de la Universidad Iberoamericana. En ellas era extrema la pobreza en estudios sobre Hidalgo.Por momentos se percibía que se trataba de un héroe descontinuado, o en entredicho, o con excomunión revalidada.En las librerías de viejo, ubicadas en la zona centro de la metrópoli, precisamente en las calles que ostentan el nombre del personaje penjamense, ni por casualidad se descubrió en sus bohemios acervos una pasta con su efigie o con su nombre.Consecuentemente, salta a la vista la necesidad de promover el estudio de nuestro pasado común, y en el caso concreto de la provincia mexicana, de nuestros valores más intrínsecos, en un intento de recuperar y fortalecer nuestra memoria histórica, por y para nosotros mismos, aceptando complementariamente los aportes procedentes de otras latitudes, pero anteponiendo la capacidad propia para aprehender y comprender el armazón y los tejidos que conforman nuestra nacionalidad.
