About the Book

Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de MIRABEAU (1749-1791), écrivain, journaliste et homme politique révolutionnaire né dans le château de Bignon-Mirabeau dans le Loiret. Souffrant de malformations physiques (un pied tordu, deux grandes dents et une énorme tête) et défiguré à l'âge de trois ans par la petite vérole, il compense sa laideur impressionnante par une remarquable intelligence et vivacité d'esprit. Il étudie le droit à l'université d'Aix-en-Provence et mène une vie de débauche ce qui entraine des relations très difficiles avec son père. Pour le soustraire à ses dettes ce dernier le fait enfermer plusieurs fois au fort de Vincennes. Après un exil au château de Joux (Jura), il s'enfuit en Hollande avec Sophie de Ruffey, épouse du marquis de Monnier. Condamné à mort par contumace, il est extradé en France et emprisonné pendant trois ans dans le fort de Vincennes où il écrit "Lettres à Sophie" et rencontre le marquis de Sade qui y est enfermé à cette époque. Libéré en 1780, Mirabeau essaie de vivre en écrivant et publiant des textes politiques et notamment un Essai sur les lettres de cachet et les prisons d'État (1782). En 1786, Talleyrand lui obtient une mission secrète à Berlin, où il reste pendant six mois pour le compte du Contrôleur général des finances, Charles Alexandre de Calonne. À la veille de la Révolution, rejeté par la noblesse, Mirabeau est nommé au Tiers-état d'Aix-en-Provence en 1789 puis à l'Assemblée nationale dont il devient l'un des plus illustres orateurs grâce à son éloquence hors du commun. Il participe à la rédaction de la Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen. Avec Condorcet, La Fayette et l'Abbé Sieyès, il fait partie de la Société des amis des Noirs qui défend l'abolition de la traite des Noirs et la fin progressive de l'esclavage. Voulant réconcilier le roi et l'Assemblée nationale, il se montre favorable à une monarchie constitutionnelle forte, pour laquelle il défend sans succès le véto absolu, tout en continuant à défendre le peuple. Il contribue à la nationalisation des biens du clergé. Mirabeau meurt brusquement, usé par le travail et les excès, le 2 avril 1791 à l'âge de 42 ans. Sa mort est perçue comme un deuil national et son corps est amené en grande pompe au Panthéon. En 1792, on découvre par sa correspondance qu'il s'était rallié secrètement au roi Louis XVI, qu'il informait et conseillait en échange d'argent pour payer ses dettes. Il est accusé de trahison et sorti du Panthéon en 1794.
