Wir alle legen Verhaltensweisen an den Tag, die sich meist ohne großes Nachdenken oder bewusstes Lernen etabliert haben und folgen damit intuitiv vermeintlich verborgenen Regeln, sogenannten Heuristiken, deren Erforschung Gegenstand verschiedener Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ist, insbesondere der Psychologie. Speziell die Wirtschaftswissenschaften arbeiten mit dem Modell des "homo oeconomicus" als rational handelnden Nutzenmaximierer, der über alle Informationen verfügt bzw. anstrebt, diese zu erlangen. Auch in unserem gesellschaftlichen Grundverständnis wird - begünstigt durch den Geist der Aufklärung - dem rationalen Handeln und Denken getreu dem Dogma "erst wägen, dann wagen" ein hoher Stellenwert beigemessen. Die Logik gilt als unübertrefflicher Ratgeber für richtiges und sinnvolles Handeln. Doch oft entbehrt das menschliche Verhalten jeglicher Rationalität. Egal ob im Privat- oder Berufsleben; oft wissen wir uns richtig zu entscheiden, ohne zu verstehen, wie diese Entscheidung zustande kommt. Eine genauere Betrachtung dieser "irrationalen" Verhaltensweisen führt zu Mustern und Regeln, die sich zumeist nicht auf der Bewusstseinsebene abspielen. Festzuhalten ist aber, dass es sich beispielsweise beim Prozess der Entscheidungsfindung trotz aller "Undurchsichtigkeit" nicht um Launen oder Zufall handelt, sondern dass es für die meisten dieser Phänomene doch Theorien mit sinnvollen Erklärungen gibt, wie diese Arbeit zeigen soll.
