Het boek van Tjentini ontstond aan het hof van Soerakarta in het begin van de 19e eeuw. Het werd gedicht in opdracht van prins Anom Amengkoenagara III en vertelt op surrealistische wijze het verhaal van de prinsen en de prinses van Giri die elkaar zijn kwijtgeraakt op hun vlucht nadat Giri - aan de noordkust van Java, niet ver van Soerabaja - is ingelijfd in opdracht van Sultan Agoeng van Mataram.- Dolend door de wouden en de steden van Java, van Karang in het uiterste westen tot Banjoewangi in het oosten, leren ze alle aardse en geestelijke wijsheid van Java kennen. Het boek van Tjentini is een erotisch spirituele zoektocht. Het is nog vol van echo's van het pre-islamitische boeddhistisch-hindoeïstische rijk van Madjapahit en voert de dialoog tussen de religies met een onbevangen vrijmoedigheid. Die vrijmoedigheid vindt men ook in de talloze erotische passages die men verspreid door het boek aantreft en die, zegt men, van de hand zijn van de aan syfilis gestorven prins Anom zelf. - Het boek draagt eigenlijk de naam van de vrouwelijke hoofdpersoon, Tambangraras, die tijdens diens omzwervingen met de oudste prins van Giri is getrouwd. Ze gaat hem achterna wanneer hij vertrokken is om te zoeken naar zijn broer en zus.
