About the Book

English summary: In her multifaceted biography about the politician and librarian Rudolf Buttmann, the historian Susanne Wanniger traces the extraordinary career of an early member of the Nazi Party. When the Nazis took power in Bavaria in March 1933, their longtime party-whip in the Bavarian state legislative assembly did not receive any type of nation post in the new regime, against all expectation. Hitler's telling rationale was "too polished, too political." Instead, Buttmann became the chief of the cultural-political division within the Ministry of the Interior in Berlin, where he negotiated the practical implementation of the 1933 Catholic concordat with, among others, Cardinal-Secretary Eugenio Pacelli, later Pope Pius XII. Only two years later, Buttmann achieved an important change in his career: at his urging he became the General Director of the Bavarian State Library and therefore returned both to Munich as well as to his occupational calling as a research librarian. Despite his Nazi convictions, NSDAP-Member #4 made none of the changes typical of the new regime in the traditional establishment of the state library but sought once more to bridge the differences between National Socialism and middle-class conservatism. The biography of Rudolf Buttmann offers not only a detailed insight into the political of the state of Bavaria to 1933 and church politics within the Nazi regime to 1935 but also into the system of academic libraries under the National Socialism- the author introduced, therefore, a new type of Nazi: the social broker.
