About the Book

English summary: One of the oldest, most characteristic, and best-attested representative of the Egyptian pantheon is the crocodile deity Sobek. Originally a water deity and guarantor of fertility, at the beginning of the second millennium Sobek began to take on other important aspects and connection with other important deities such as Re, Horus, and Osiris. Sobek's crocodile nature determined the conception of the deity in important ways but these began to change in later era. Holger Kockelmann offers the first extensive investigation of Sobek and other crocodile deities that are closely associated with him, which includes all cult regions in Egypt. The transdisciplinary study connects a wide variety of courses: Egyptian images and texts, cultic object, architectural and archeological finds in cult building, Greek papyrological and epigraphic sources, Hellensitic and Roman images, and reports by ancient authors across time. From this broad material base, the first part of the study examines the iconography of the god, the multi-facetted religious conceptions concerning him as well changing relationships with other deities, both Egyptian and foreign. The second part of the study focuses on the various aspects of the cult, especially the cult topography, ritual, temple equipment and the ritual reality of the crocodile god's shrines with particular attention paid to the interference between the cult and the concept of Sobek. The final part of this study includes the indices, bibliography and numerous panel images.
