Es gibt wohl kaum eine antike Schlacht, auf die in ihrer Folgezeit so viel Bezug genommen wurde, wie jene an den Thermopylen. Nicht nur, dass sie - obwohl eine verheerende Niederlage - später als Wendepunkt im Kriegsgeschehen angesehen wurde, sie verschaffte den Spartiaten den Ruf der Unbesiegbarkeit und machte ihren Heerführer - Leonidas - zu einer der wohl bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten der Perserkriegszeit. Was die Auseinandersetzung bei Thermopylai so interessant und außergewöhnlich macht, ist die lange Rezeptionsgeschichte, welche noch bis in unsere Zeit andauert. Häufig wurde die Schlacht vor dem Hintergrund politischer Interessen instrumentalisiert. Das bekannteste Beispiel stellt sicher die Rede von Hermann Göring dar, der die 6. Armee in Sibirien mit den 300 Spartiaten verglich, um so dem deutschen Volke ein leuchtendes Beispiel für Durchhaltewillen und Liebe zum Vaterland vor Augen zu führen. Getreu der Parole 'Meine Ehre heißt Treue' sollte auch das deutsche Volk bis zum letzten Mann in den Untergang gehen. Göring war jedoch nicht der Erste, der auf die Idee kam, die Schlacht an den Thermopylen für seine Zwecke zu nutzen. Die Rezeption der Schlacht setzte wesentlich früher - quasi unmittelbar, nachdem sie geschlagen war - ein. Schon an Herodots Historien, die als wichtigstes Werk über die Perserkriege gelten, ist dies deutlich ersichtlich. Herodot schrieb die Historien ca. 50 Jahre nach den Ereignissen der Perserkriegszeit und musste sich dazu auf Augenzeugen berufen, er berichtet also selber nur aus 2. Hand. Dies wirft gerade für die Schlacht bei Thermopylai Probleme auf. Es existierten bereits zu Herodots Zeiten verschiedene Versionen des Schlachtverlaufs. Noch undurchsichtiger sind die Handlungsmotivationen der Beteiligten, denn auch für diese gibt es mehrere Erklärungen. Das Problem ist also die Ambivalenz in dem Bericht, der die Hauptquelle darstellt. Eine weitere Schwierigkeit ist die mangelnde Überprüfbarkeit der Historien, da es kaum Parallelquelle
