Edouard est un jeune Parisien oisif, bon, brave et quelque peu mélancolique qui partage sa vie entre sa nouvelle maîtresse Marie, aimée à la légère, ses amis qu'il retrouve chez celle-ci pour des parties de cartes, et des cours de droit qu'il ne suit que de loin. Cette vie de plaisirs et de superficialité va être ébranlée par la rencontre d'une mystérieuse femme, Herminie, lors d'un bal à l'Opéra. Elle lui avoue un amour passionné et sa furieuse singularité son amour est absolu mais peut cesser du jour au lendemain et se changer en une haine mortelle si Edouard révèle quoi que soit à leur sujet. Troublé par cette femme téméraire et peu commune, Edouard se laisse entraîner dans cette passion sans aimer la jeune femme, bien que l'aventure soit périlleuse: pour rejoindre Herminie et le plaisir, il lui faut, la nuit, jeter une planche entre leur deux fenêtres, à hauteur de quatre étages. Mais cette femme, toute absorbée par sa propre passion et ne faisant montre d'aucun autre sentiment, ennuie bien vite Edouard, pourtant envoûté par la volupté au départ. Il cherche alors à rompre cet engagement. Lors d'un bal où il doit rejoindre Herminie, il raconte toute son histoire à un de ses amis, Edmond, qui la révèle par la suite à Marie, qu'Edouard avait soudainement quittée pour Herminie. Croisant celle-ci au bal, Marie ne peut s'empêcher de lui lancer une allusion à sa relation avec Edouard. Piquée dans son orgueil, Herminie convie Edouard le lendemain soir dans sa chambre. Mais celui-ci est parti pour l'Egypte et c'est Edmond, désireux de connaître Herminie, qui est sur la planche car son ami lui a confié l'appartement. La jeune femme d'une main sûre retire la planche afin de se venger de la trahison de celui qu'elle aimait et qu'elle croit être à sa merci. A son retour d'Egypte, Edouard apprend la chute mortelle de son ami et la démolition de la maison d'Herminie, envolée pour l'Italie.
